Three nearby schools are on lockdown following a shooting at the Fort Stewart military base.

These schools were placed on a soft lockdown “out of an abundance of caution,” according to a post from the district on Facebook.

Today was the first day students returned to classrooms in the Liberty County School System, which includes the schools placed on lockdown, according to a calendar.

Officials at the military base say there is no longer an active threat and the shooter has been apprehended.

Fort Stewart is located in Liberty County.

The school district said it will provide updates as they become available.

Georgia Sen. Raphael Warnock said his is closely monitoring the Fort Stewart shooting incident.

“I’m heartbroken to see the news of an active shooter incident at Fort Stewart today. I’m monitoring the situation closely and join all of Georgia as we pray for the safety of our servicemembers, staff, and their families,” Warnock wrote in post on X.

Officials said the mass shooting and response at Fort Stewart unfolded this morning, according to a Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield verified Facebook post.

President Donald Trump has been briefed on the shooting at Fort Stewart military base in Georgia, White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt said.

“The White House is monitoring the situation,” she said in a post on X.

Five soldiers were shot by an active shooter at Fort Stewart in Georgia today, the Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said.

The shooting occurred in the “2nd Armored Brigade Combat Team area,” it said in a post on Facebook.

The soldiers were treated on the base and then transported to Winn Army Hospital, Fort Stewart Hunter Army Airfield said, adding that there is no longer an active threat.

The shooter at Fort Stewart in Georgia was apprehended and is no longer a threat, authorities said.

Multiple casualties have been reported.

Agents with the FBI in Savannah, Georgia, are responding to the active shooter situation at Fort Stewart, FBI Atlanta Public Affairs’ Tony Thomas told CNN.

The FBI is coordinating with Army Criminal Investigation Division, Thomas said.The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives is also responding, the agency said in a post on X.

Georgia Gov. Brian Kemp said he’s saddened by the shooting at Fort Stewart and offered prayers to families of victims in a post on X.

“As we remain in close contact with law enforcement on the ground, Marty, the girls, and I are saddened by today’s tragedy at Ft. Stewart. We are keeping the victims, their families, and all those who answer the call to serve in our hearts and prayers, and we ask that Georgians everywhere do the same,” Kemp wrote.

Casualties have been reported amid a lockdown at the US Army’s Fort Stewart in Georgia, after a Fort Stewart police spokesperson confirmed “there is an active shooter.”

The nature of the casualties is unclear.

More than 10,000 people — soldiers, family members and Army civilian employees — reside on the base.
