March Madness 2025: How Final Four teams built championship-level lineups through transfer portal, recruiting

The question that dominates college basketball recruiting in the modern era is how best to balance the transfer portal with high school prospect acquisition. Each of the Final Four teams found the ideal answers to that dilemma, but their approaches are all unique. Florida, for example, is the heaviest on transfers. Duke, meanwhile, stacked up blue-chip talent to build a younger roster with the most raw talent in the NCAA Tournament.

One of the most appalling facts about the 2025 Final Four is that of the seven former top-25 recruits left in the March Madness field, every single one of them resides on the Blue Devils roster. That includes a quintet of former five-star prospects.

There is no one right answer for how to build a roster, though, and the reality is that every team must use both avenues. Every rotation in the Final Four features at least three transfers, and each team regularly plays at least three of its own homegrown talents, too.
