March Madness live updates, scores, bracket: Florida ousts defending champ UConn in men’s NCAA tournament
- The Gators survive after a TOUGH 40-minute battle with the back-to-back defending champs.
- The hero of the day for Florida is Walter Clayton Jr. The All-American hit two clutch 3-pointers in crunch time to lift the Gators to the win. He finished with a game-high 23 points with five treys.
- The Huskies’ record-tying streak of 13 straight tournament wins is over. The Gators advance to take on the winner of Colorado State and Maryland in the Sweet 16.
- Counted out after a turbulent, underwhelming season, UConn made it clear Sunday that it wouldn’t surrender the crown without a fight.
- Walter Clayton Jr. had to pry it from the Huskies’ white-knuckle grip.
- Clayton scored eight points in the final three minutes including a dagger of a contested 3-pointer as top-seeded Florida escaped with an 77-75 victory in the second round of the NCAA tournament. The Gators trailed by as many as six points and did not take their first lead until there was less than three minutes to go.
- Clayton, an All-American this season, finished with 23 points. Not bad for a kid who started only four games as a true freshman at Iona four years ago.
- Just like that, the Gators are up 70-64 with one minute left in the game after some free throws and another clutch trey from Walter Clayton Jr.!
- The Gators are in front after a couple quick UConn turnovers and this clutch 3 from Walter Clayton Jr. There’s 2:27 left and Florida is up 64-61.
- We are getting into crunch time and the Huskies have a 61-58 lead. Florida has missed some crucial free throws and bunny layups down the stretch. It could end up being the difference in this one.
- The Gators star was looking to bring the house down in a close game, but he couldn’t finish the dunk and delivered this hilarious moment instead.
- If the Gators get upset, a big reason will be their struggles near the basket. UConn takes its second timeout of the game with a 52-48 lead with 8:37 to go.
- We are back in action for this West region matchup. Both teams had obvious issues throughout the opening half that they’ll surely try to stem. Florida gave away the ball 9 times; UConn struggled shooting the ball despite getting open looks.
- Anybody familiar with college basketball the past few years knew Dan Hurley’s Huskies weren’t going to duck out of this tournament quietly.
- They’re getting contributions from all over despite the poor shooting to start the game (11-for-34 from the field, 4-for-18 from 3 at halftime). Samson Johnson is doing yeoman’s work on the glass and has 9 rebounds already.
- On the other end, Alijah Martin has been the star for the Gators. He has 14 points on 6-for-9 shooting. Florida’s big men are struggling a bit.
- This game is fun. It’s not the prettiest game you’ll ever see. But UConn is refusing to let the Gators inch away despite its poor shooting performance. If the Huskies get going in the second half, Florida could be in trouble.
- UConn just keeps slinging 3s early in this one and Dan Hurley said during an interview that was going to be the case to try to avoid Florida’s length at the rim.
- The problem is the Huskies are just 3-for-14 from deep so far.
- This is a rock fight. The Gators have a one-point lead with 7:58 remaining in the first half and have missed their last five shots. UConn has taken seven more shots and the teams are a combined 10-for-35 from the field.
