Martha Stewart Claps Back at Katy Perry’s Space Flight With This 2007 Flex

There were plenty of celebrities who were critical of the April 14 launch of the Blue Origin space flight with Katy Perry, Gayle King, and Lauren Sánchez, but now, Martha Stewart has entered the chat.

The 83-year-old lifestyle guru took aim at Perry on April 17 when she shared a 2007 clip from The Martha Stewart Show — let’s just say, Stewart did it first. The voiceover began, “I boarded a Boeing 727 aircraft called ‘G-Force One’ and experienced what astronauts feel when they reach zero gravity.” She’s seen bopping, flipping and being tossed around while getting a taste of what it’s like in space 18 years ago.

The text written over the video was very clear about who they were talking about: “Do you ever feel like a plastic bag drifting through the wind?” The reference was from Perry’s 2010 hit song, “Firework.” If that message wasn’t shady enough, Stewart added in the caption, “In case you spaced out in 2007, Martha has always been ahead of her time.”

Judging from the comments under the post, Stewart won this round. “I love the universal dragging. So good,” wrote one fan. Another follower added a bit of humor, “The gravity of this isn’t lost on me.” Plus, there was one commenter who spoke only the facts, “Martha is the blueprint!!!!!”

Perry has been dealing with the backlash from the flight and her comments after the trip didn’t seem to help the situation — it felt out of touch to some critics.

“I’ve covered that song in the past,” Perry told Variety about singing Louis Armstrong’s classic, “What a Wonderful World” while in flight. “Obviously, my higher self is steering the ship. I had no clue I’d one day decide to sing a little bit of that in space.”

The “Roar” singer tried to emphasize how impactful the 11-minute ride was for her in terms of appreciating nature and the planet we live on. “It’s not about me. It’s not about singing my song,” she added. “It’s about a collective energy and making space for future women. It’s about this wonderful world that we see right out there and appreciating it. This is all for the benefit of Earth.”

Still, the chorus of cries from fans continued to point out that the Blue Origin flight missed the mark, but Stewart hit the bullseye with her clip.
