Marvel star reveals he ‘died’ and hallucinated after near-fatal snowplow accident

An actor best known for his role in the Marvel Cinematic Universe has shared details about his near-fatal snowplow accident.

Jeremy Renner, who played Hawkeye in several Marvel movies, revealed he “died” while waiting for help following the accident in his recently released memoir “My Next Breath.”

The accident occurred in Reno, Nev. on New Year’s Day of 2023. Renner was ran over by a 14,000-pound snowplow while attempting to save his nephew from being struck by the same machine. The incident resulted in Renner breaking more than 30 bones in and losing six quarts of blood.

“As I lay on the ice, my heart rate slowed, and right there, on that New Year’s Day, unknown to my daughter, my sisters, my friends, my father, my mother, I just got tired,” Renner, 54, wrote in the memoir, per Us Weekly. “After about 30 minutes on the ice, of breathing manually for so long, an effort akin to doing 10 or 20 push-ups per minute for half an hour … that’s when I died.”

The “Avengers: Endgame” actors explained that his heart rate had “bottomed out at 18.”

“I died, right there on the driveway to my house,” he wrote. “I know I died — in fact, I’m sure of it.”

Renner also claimed that the pain medicine he was given while recovering were causing him to hallucinate. He detailed a conversation he had with legendary entertainer Jamie Foxx while hallucinating.

“When the curtains didn’t respond, Jamie Foxx did. He was in my room quite a bit (he wasn’t),” Renner wrote. “We talked about this and that (I talked, he didn’t say much because he wasn’t really there); we went snowmobiling together (we didn’t — for a start, there’s no snow in Southern California).”

The actor said his family dismissed his claims of hallucination so, against the advice of doctors, he stopped taking the prescribed pain meds because he “hated” how they made him feel.

“Now that I was out of the hospital, I just wanted to rush back into a sense of normal, a normal that didn’t involve chatting with curtains or an absent Jamie Foxx,” he wrote.

Renner, a two-time Oscar nominee, has appeared in movies like “The Hurt Locker,” “The Town,” “Wind River,” and several Marvel films such as “Thor,” “The Avengers,” “Avengers: Age of Ultron,” “Captain America: Civil War,” “Avengers: Endgame,” and “Hawkeye.”
