Mike Macdonald explains what Jalen Milroe’s role in offense could be

The Seattle Seahawks were full of surprises on day two of the 2025 NFL draft. Chief among them was the fact the team selected Alabama quarterback Jalen Milroe with the No. 92 overall pick in the third round. Our initial analysis here at Seahawks Wire laid out how Seattle now has a legitimate succession plan at quarterback in place. However, it seems there remains a distinct possibility we could be seeing Milroe in action this coming season.

Following the action on day two, head coach Mike Macdonald spoke to the media and explained a potential vision for the quarterback position. The team did sign Sam Darnold earlier in the offseason, and barring anything unexpected, he will still be QB1 for the Seahawks. But that does not mean Milroe is going to be permanently relegated to the bench.

Need I remind anyone who the Seahawks offensive coordinator is? Klint Kubiak with the New Orleans Saints last year had another absurdly athletic backup quarterback in Taysom Hill – one of the ultimate Jack-of-all-trades in the NFL. In 2024, Hill had 465 yards from scrimmage (278 rushing, 187 receiving) as well as six touchdowns on the ground. While he was utilized more as a rushing/receiving threat as a tight end rather than an actual quarterback, the evidence still remains that Kubiak was able to utilize a unique talent to his advantage.

It’s not likely Milroe will be utilized as a receiving threat, but near the goal line? Last year, Milroe had an astonishing 20 rushing touchdowns which brought his collegiate total on the ground to 33. To put this into perspective, Milroe’s 20 scores were 10 more than Ohio State running back TreVeyon Henderson had last season… and Henderson went No. 38 overall to the New England Patriots.

Milroe is in a perfect spot. He has an opportunity to develop without pressure, but is going to be playing in a system that still fully intends to use his athleticism to its advantage.
