Yelich: Lopsided losses ‘unacceptable;’ Chad Patrick makes start tomorrow
Christian Yelich didn’t mince words after the loss to Kansas City.
“It’s just four games but we gotta do better,” he said. “It’s unacceptable to do that. There’s different kinds of losses, but we’re better than that.”
Milwaukee will try for the first win at 6:40 p.m. CT Tuesday, and it’ll mark the first start of Chad Patrick’s big-league career. Patrick, who had a breakout season with Class AAA Nashville last year after Milwaukee acquired him in the offseason, was a surprise add to the roster out of camp after the rash of injuries that hit the pitching staff.
Patrick made his big-league debut Saturday, allowing two earned runs. On Tuesday, he’ll get his first start, facing Royals starter Michael Lorenzen. It’ll be the Brewers’ first night game of the season.

Pat Murphy on the Brewers starting 0-4
Brewers manager Pat Murphy half-heartedly joked that he bragged too much about his team not losing four games in a row at all last season, and it came up to bite him early in his second full year as manager.
“Believe me guys, If you think there isn’t energy or you think these guys aren’t trying, you think these guys aren’t going at it, trust me … They’re hurting as bad as anyone that loves the Brewers is hurting,” he said after the 11-1 loss to the Royals. …
“We had a chance to win the first game of the year and had some things go against us, some that mother nature was a part of. Other than that, we haven’t been competitive in three games. We haven’t been close from the start, but it’s not for lack of effort. These guys care as much as anybody. You can’t point fingers and start blaming things, and it’s not helping. We’re all in kind of an ugly state when you don’t get the result you want. You get so emotionally attached to that result, you get away from what you really should be attached to, which is the process.”
The Brewers have allowed at least two runs in all four first innings this season, including seven homers. That wasn’t the problem today, but when Christian Yelich couldn’t flag down a fly ball close to the wall, it opened the door for a three-run rally, and the Royals were off and running.
4:12 pm CT March 31, 2025
It’s over. The Brewers are 0-4 and have barely been competitive thus far
The Milwaukee Brewers did not lose four games in a row at any point in 2024. Not only did they lose four in a row to start 2025, but three of the games have been lopsided laughers.
Today, it’s an 11-1 loss to the Blue Jays, the worst home-opening loss in a decade and a brutal result on the heels of losses in New York by scores of 12-3 and 20-9. Milwaukee’s pitching staff has been ravaged by injuries, but the guys called upon haven’t gotten outs. None of the four pitchers who worked for Milwaukee today looked great, and the team’s top hitters have been nearly silent.
It ties the most runs allowed in the first four games of the season in MLB history (47), matching the 1954 St. Louis Cardinals (who actually won one of the games!)
Jackson Chourio at least doubled in a run after three strikeouts to start the game.

Brewers get runners but no runs in the eighth
Vinny Capra hits into an inning-ending double play to erase a pair of Brewers baserunners and we head to the ninth with the Royals owning a 10-1 lead.
Milwaukee has six hits, but three of them are infield knocks hit softly to the right place or off the pitcher. A fourth was a lazy single by Brice Turang. The other two: doubles by Jackson Chourio and Isaac Collins to plate a run.
The Brewers will get back to “full strength” in the bullpen tomorrow with the return of Abner Uribe, but Grant Anderson will be down after he threw three innings (I presume) today. Anderson is back out there for the ninth, so perhaps we go without a position player.

3:52 pm CT March 31, 2025
Is this the worst start to the Brewers season ever?
Yes, yes it is, at least through four games.
Five other Brewers teams have started the year 0-4, and one of them, the 2011 Brewers, went on to win a franchise-record 96 games. That’s the good news. The other teams … did not fare as well.
The 1984 team (67-94) lost all four of its first games by three runs or fewer. The 2001 team (68-94) lost an 11-3 game but also opened the year with a 1-0 loss and another loss in extras, 8-6. The 2003 team (68-94) lost a 7-0 game but also two by two runs.
In 2011, the Brewers lost a 12-3 game but also two one-run losses (including a heartbreaking walk-off loss on opening day) and a two-run loss. The 2015 team (68-94) lost a 10-0 game but also a 5-4 game in extras, plus games by 5-2 and 6-2 counts.
That’s a far cry from a 4-2 loss, a 20-9 loss and a 12-3 loss, followed by however this ends, currently 10-1.
The 2015 team went on to lose its first six games. The 1984 team went 0-5 and 1-7.
This is the most runs the Brewers have surrendered in the home opener since a 12-3 loss in 2016. The team has three comparable deficits aside from that 12-3 game: A 12-0 loss in 1970 in the inaugural season in Milwaukee, a 10-1 loss in 1986 and a 10-0 loss in 2015.
That’s on the heels of allowing a franchise-high 15 home runs in a three-game stretch to start the year.

Jackson Chourio delivers an RBI double and finally gives American Family Field something to cheer about
Jackson Chourio smoked an opposite-field double with two outs in the seventh, plating a run and finally giving the fans a reason to stand and cheer. That’s it for the Brewers, who still face a 10-1 deficit. But Chourio, who struck out his first three times, gets a breakthrough.

3:37 pm CT March 31, 2025
The Brewers finally have an extra-base hit
Milwaukee gets its first double of the day, and it comes courtesy of Isaac Collins, who pinch hit for Garrett Mitchell leading off the seventh against reliever Angel Zerpa.
It’s far too late, of course. The Brewers headed into the half-inning trailing, 10-0, on track for one of the worst home openers in franchise history and, it goes without saying, one of the worst four-game starts in franchise history, if not the worst.
Bubic gone at least helps the cause. He allowed just three hits in six innings, with two walks and eight strikeouts on 96 pitches.
3:26 pm CT March 31, 2025
The Brewers are getting booed as they fall behind, 9-0
Are we … going to see Jake Bauers on the hill three days in a row? We’re starting to wonder!
Grant Anderson, newly recalled to take the place of injured Aaron Civale, couldn’t find the plate when he checked into the game with the bases loaded. First, he walked in a run, then allowed a two-run single to Jonathan India. That makes it 8-0, still with only one out and runners at the corners, and Bobby Witt Jr. followed with a single roped down the right field line to make it 9-0.
Milwaukee is coming off losses of 20-9 and 12-3.
Jake Bauers pitched each of the last two blowout losses to the Yankees, and Milwaukee is fumbling through a third straight blowout. So will it be Bauers or a different position player taking the hill in the ninth? Stay tuned.
3:16 pm CT March 31, 2025
Rickie Weeks gets ejected arguing balls and strikes
Brewers associate manager Rickie Weeks lets the frustration boil over and just got ejected arguing balls and strikes. Hunter Renfroe just took a close 0-2 pitch that appeared to be a ball just slightly low, but it’s been a tight zone this game from Brennan Miller.
Renfroe later flew out. Probably could file this under the old cliché of “trying to fire up the team” as they torpedo toward a fourth straight loss opening 2025.
3:12 pm CT March 31, 2025
Salvador Perez hits a bomb and the Royals are up 5-0
Salvador Perez trots around the bases in hyper slow motion after hitting a bomb against Elvis Peguero leading off the seventh; the only question was whether or not the ball would trickle foul. It did not. The Brewers are well on their way to starting the season 0-4 after not having a four-game losing streak at any point in 2024.
3:07 pm CT March 31, 2025
Brewers continue to make soft contact, go quietly in sixth
The Brewers haven’t hit anything solidly today, and the sixth was the latest example. A grounder from Hoskins, a pop out by Frelick and a broken-bat groundout by Capra (the throw barely beat him). Milwaukee stuck on three singles today against Kris Bubic, and the deficit remains 4-0.
END SIXTH:Royals 4, Brewers 0
3:01 pm CT March 31, 2025
Royals threaten against Elvis Puegero but don’t score in sixth
The Brewers are running out of time to cook up a rally, but they did just toss a fourth straight scoreless inning. Elvis Peguero allowed a couple batters to reach but ultimately retired Bobby Witt Jr. and Vinnie Pasquantino with a runner in scoring position to end the frame. It’s still a 4-0 deficit heading to the bottom of the sixth
2:57 pm CT March 31, 2025
From the ‘It could be worse’ department…
The Minnesota Twins, who also started the year 0-3, are down 9-0 to the dreadful White Sox and getting no-hit through six innings today.
2:44 pm CT March 31, 2025
Jackson Chourio now 0-for-3 with three strikeouts
It must be something about openers for Jackson Chourio this year.
After he opened the year in Yankee Stadium with a dubious 0-for-5, five-strikeout day, he’s now struck out in all three of his plate appearances against the Royals at the top of the lineup. This one kind of hurt, too, after Brice Turang lofted a single to center opening the frame.
Milwaukee’s not going to get anything going if the big bats don’t snap out of it.
Christian Yelich flew out and William Contreras, who also has two strikeouts today, grounded back to the pitcher. Ugly all around from Milwaukee.
END FIFTH:Royals 4, Brewers 0
2:43 pm CT March 31, 2025
Brewers survive a jam in the fifth
Bryan Hudson has looked shaky in each of his both of his relief outings this year, but he escapes the jam but getting a foul pop from MJ Melendez to end the inning. Tough day so far for Melendez, who struck out twice and popped out in a big spot while his teammates have been having success.
All the runners got on base without a hit; Hudson hit Witt with a pitch and walked Salvador Perez and Hunter Renfroe. The Royals still lead, 4-0.
2:26 pm CT March 31, 2025
Brewers bats do nothing in the fourth
Milwaukee goes 1-2-3 in the fourth; their only two hits against Kris Bubic to this point have been singles that registered at 58 and 53 miles per hour off the bat.
Vinny Capra and Garrett Mitchell both struck out.
Elvin Rodríguez is not coming back for the fifth; Bryan Hudson is checking in. The starter allowed four runs, six hits and one walk with three strikeouts in his four innings. Not an ideal 27th birthday for the first-time Brewers pitcher.
END FOURTH:Royals 4, Brewers 0
2:18 pm CT March 31, 2025
Royals get two-out walk but nothing else in fourth
Elvin Rodríguez might make it through a fifth inning now after a relatively quiet fourth in which he issued a two-out walk but nothing else. Jonathan India flew out to center to end the frame.
He’s thrown 64 pitches. The Brewers now need the bats to come through after a couple threats fell short the past two innings.
2:08 pm CT March 31, 2025
Tough start to the season for Brewers’ best hitters
Jackson Chourio and William Contreras both struck out in the third, and the Brewers stranded Christian Yelich (hit by a pitch) and Rhys Hoskins (walk) on base. Sal Frelick hit a ball well to left, but it was flagged down by MJ Melendez to end the inning.
Contreras came into the game with two singles in 11 at-bats and now has two strikeouts on the day and five for the year. Chourio, who struck out five times in the opener, is now 3 for 17 with one double and nine punchouts.
Yelich, meanwhile, is just 1 for 11 this season with a single. All told, the trio are a combined 6 for 42 with 19 strikeouts. Coupled with rough pitching circumstances, you can see the problem.
END THIRD:Royals 4, Brewers 0
1:59 pm CT March 31, 2025
Brewers avoid more damage in the third, but barely
Garrett Mitchell made a beautiful running catch up against the wall with two outs in the third to keep Hunter Renfroe from another RBI hit, ending the inning with no damage. Salvador Perez’s one-out single went for naught.
Pat Murphy said he’d be able to use Elvin Rodriguez for roughly 70-80 pitches today. He’s only at 48, even though he’s been rocked for six hits in three frames, plus another loud out, but I would expect the Brewers need him to go one more to minimize the tax on the bullpen.
Royals lead 4-0 as we head to the bottom of the third, with the top of the order due up.
1:52 pm CT March 31, 2025
Brewers load the bases in the second on some light contact but can’t cash in
The Brewers got some good fortune in the second inning against Bubic but couldn’t bring in a run. Sal Frelick drew a one-out walk, and after a pop out, Garrett Mitchell hit a squibber single to the left side and Joey Ortiz reached on a similarly lightly-struck ball.
That brought up Brice Turang, who hit a bounder to first base that Mark Canha fielded for the inning-ending out.
END SECOND:Royals 4, Brewers 0
1:40 pm CT March 31, 2025
Maikel Garcia homers for Royals, making it 4-0
It isn’t getting better in the second.
No. 9 hitter Maikel Garcia just hit a booming home run to center field against Elvin Rodríguez, making it 4-0. The Brewers starter rebounded to retire Jonathan India and Bobby Witt Jr., but the Brewers have a big hole early.
1:36 pm CT March 31, 2025
All three Brewers strike out in the first
The Milwaukee Brewers need to push the reset button on the season.
Already down 3-0 after an ugly first inning, the leadoff hitters of Jackson Chourio, Christian Yelich and William Contreras all strike out swinging against Kris Bubic, a pitcher with a 4.66 ERA making his first start since 2023.
Long way to go in the ballgame, of course, but the Brewers have given their fans next to nothing to cheer for in the disastrous three-game and one-inning start to 2025. Perhaps it all starts in the second.
END FIRST:Royals 3, Brewers 0
1:27 pm CT March 31, 2025
Brewers already down 3-0, yikes
If you wanted a reprieve from the frustrating series in New York this weekend, you’re not getting it here in the first inning.
The Brewers had a chance to get out of the inning unscathed with runners at the corners and two outs, but Michael Massey’s long fly ball to left eluded Christian Yelich and fell for a ground-rule double. Two more runs then crossed on a single to left by ex-Brewers outfielder Hunter Renfroe.
The good news: There’s a long way to go in this game (and season).
The bad news: There’s a long way to go in this game (and season)?

Slight delay as Payamps family gets … stuck on the field?
We had a slight delay as we waited for some pregame participants to leave the field, but the door in the right field corner had already been shut. Reliever Joel Payamps’ wife and two daughters were still out on the diamond and trying to get someone to re-open the door.
A humorous start to the day. Then, Jonathan India hits a 1-2 pitch from starter Elvin Rodríguez to left field for a base hit, and we are off. A slow chopper by Bobby Witt Jr. was mishandled by Rodríguez (it would have been a hit anyway) and the Royals are in business against the birthday boy.
1:16 pm CT March 31, 2025
Has the roof ever been open on opening day?
The roof, as you might imagine, is closed for this year’s home opener. Also as you might imagine, that’s pretty typical. The weather in April can run a gamut of extremes in Milwaukee, but late March/early April is usually not the time to let the air in.
But in 2010, the Brewers indeed played an opening-day under the sky, with a temperature at first pitch of 68 degrees in a 5-3 loss to the Colorado Rockies on April 5, which also happened to be the season opener.
On two occasions, the roof was open by the third home game of the year, in 2021 (April 4) and 2008 (April 8). That’s also true for 2020, but that was August and nothing about that season should count.
Last year, the Brewers opened the roof for the first time on May 1. The latest the roof opened for the first time was May 29, in 2008.

Royals in powder blue, and there’s a couple former Brewers out there
The Royals, adorned in their powder-blue jerseys, are getting announced along the third base line. Mark Canha, who was signed by the Brewers this offseason and then dealt to the Royals late in camp, is in the starting lineup. So is Hunter Renfroe, playing right field behind Canha at first base.
Former Brewers minor-leaguer Lucas Erceg also comes out of the bullpen for the Royals. Erceg was a position player who converted to the mound and was eventually traded by the Brewers to Oakland, where he made his major league debut. He was dealt to the Royals last year. Bullpen coach Mitch Stetter also pitched for the Brewers.
Hitting coach Alec Zumwalt briefly pitched in the Brewers organization. He combined on a no-hitter at Class AAA Nashville with Carlos Villanueva and Mike Meyers. Villanueva now has a role in the Brewers front office.

Could Mark Attanasio become a future MLB commissioner?
Bob Nightengale of USA Today
had an interesting nugget in his Sunday notebook.
“There is no clear-cut favorite to become MLB commissioner after Rob Manfred retires in Jan. 2029, but several owners say they plan to push for owner Mark Attanasio of the Milwaukee Brewers to be his successor,” he wrote.
“I was tempted to call Bob and say, ‘Who’s telling you this?'” Attanasio said before the home opener. “Because I haven’t had any conversations of the sort. My family and I love owning the team … I just love what I’m doing here.”

Who is Elvin Rodríguez? Get to know the Brewers’ starting pitcher in the home opener. He’ll be pitching on his birthday
The depleted Brewers pitching staff will turn to Elvin Rodríguez for the home-opener start Monday. Brewers fans may wonder who that is, since he wasn’t part of the franchise in previous years. He’s one of the few free-agent signings that the Brewers made this offseason.
spent all of last season in Japan with the Yakult Swallows, and he signed a one-year deal with a club option for 2026 with the Brewers this offseason.
He’ll be making his Brewers debut on his birthday; Rodríguez turns 27 years old on March 31.
In 88 innings in Nippon Professional Baseball last year, Rodriguez worked to a 1.74 earned-run average, striking out 73 batters and walking 26.
He’s pitched very briefly in the Majors before, first with Detroit in 2022 for seven games before making one appearance for Tampa Bay in 2023. He owns a 9.55 career ERA in 33 innings in the majors.
Rodríguez brings with him an intriguing primary two-pitch mix with a fastball and slider. He was brought here as a player who could start or relieve, but the Brewers would likely before far more comfortable if he were working out of the pen. Manager Pat Murphy said Rodríguez could go roughly 80 pitches on Monday, meaning it’s likely to be another de facto bullpen day for the Brewers.

Pat Murphy, Christian Yelich remember Bob Uecker
Players and manager Pat Murphy met the media before Monday’s home opener, and as you’d might expect, Bob Uecker was a topic of conversation.
“He’ll be with us for this season and many seasons going forward,” said outfielder Christian Yelich, who wore a plaid suit in Uecker’s honor at the
first game of the season in New York.
Yelich mentioned that the home opener offered an opportunity for the loss of Uecker, who died at age 90 in January, to really sink in. Uecker often didn’t travel to road games late in his career, but he still showed up on opening day.
“It was a friend coming to talk to you,” Murphy said, reflecting on the daily pregame show he’d conduct with Uecker. “We had a job to do for five minutes, then he’d come to talk to you with a wealth of knowledge and great stories. Just a beautiful spirit. He was coming home. This was his home.”
“I knew it would sink in today, and it’s sinking in,” Brewers owner Mark Attanasio said.
“I did my best to find a jacket in my closet that’s something he would wear,” he added, sporting a plaid coat. “I know everybody here misses him, as me and my family do.”

The Brewers really won this trade, didn’t they?
The Athletics designated Esteury Ruiz for assignment Sunday, a roster move that might have particular interest for some Brewers fans.
Ruiz was the player traded in a three-team deal before the 2023 season in which Milwaukee received William Contreras from the Braves and reliever Joel Payamps from the Athletics. Payamps has been solid over two years and Contreras has been even better, taking fifth in the MVP voting last year and winning two Silver Sluggers in as many seasons.
Ruiz stole an American League rookie record 67 bases in 2023 but wasn’t a full-time player last year and now has been sent off the 40-man roster. If he clears waivers, he can stay in the Athletics organization, but it makes the deal look even more lopsided than it already did.
Ruiz played only briefly with the Brewers after he was acquired in 2022 from the Padres in the Josh Hader trade.

Why are a bunch of seats missing at American Family Field?
Fans attending the home opener will notice a section of seats missing in the fourth deck (terrace level) in the right field corner. The club has placed a banner commemorating late broadcaster Bob Uecker in part of the space, with the line “I must be in the front row.”
The team is essentially pulling 1,600 seats to build needed additional office space for the growing baseball operations department. Brewers president of business operations, Rick Schlesinger, said before the season that the seats often were the last to sell, and the stadium still contained a capacity of greater than 40,000.
He said the team would continue to study ways to add more seating in the future.

Brewers place Aaron Civale on the injured list
The Brewers took another blow to their pitching staff with news revealed Monday that starter Aaron Civale would wind up in the 15-day injured list. Civale pitched three innings Sunday against the Yankees but was removed with a left hamstring issue.
The Brewers announced right-handed reliever Grant Anderson had been recalled from Class AAA Nashville to take the spot.
Manager Pat Murphy didn’t have a specific timeline but said the Brewers knew Civle would need at least the 15 days. He later said he expected Civale back before May.
Civale joins a crowded injured list. The Brewers rotation is already without Tobias Myers (left oblique), Aaron Ashby (right oblique) and DL Hall (left lat strain). Brandon Woodruff remains out as he works back from shoulder surgery, and Jose Quintana was still building up to full readiness after a delayed start to spring training. Robert Gasser, who underwent Tommy John surgery midway through 2024, could also be a late-season option in 2025.
Murphy said he expected Myers and Quintana back in April, as well as reliever Nick Mears, who also missed a chunk of spring training with illness.
The roster move temporarily adds a rested option back into a bullpen that was worked heavily in New York. Abner Uribe was serving the fourth and final game of his suspension on Monday.

Royals starting pitcher vs Brewers: What to know about Kris Bubic
The Brewers will face left-hander Kris Bubic, who is back in the rotation for the Royals after pitching out of the bullpen in 2024 as he returned from Tommy John surgery two years ago.
In 27 games for the playoff-bound Royals, Bubic had a 2.67 ERA and 1.02 WHIP with 39 strikeouts and five walks. He had seven holds and three blown saves.
The 27-year-old suffered a left elbow injury early in the 2023 season that required Tommy John surgery. He missed the rest of the season and didn’t return until July 2024.
He started 22 games in 2022, his last full season, and went 3-13 with a 5.58 ERA and 1.70 WHIP.
For his career, Bubic has pitched in 97 games with 60 starts, and has an 11-29 record, 4.66 ERA, 1.48 WHIP and a 2.2 K/BB ratio.
