It’s not unusual for a team to both buy and sell at the trade deadline, but it is a bit unusual to see a team both buy and sell, at the same position, within a matter of minutes. But the Tampa Bay Rays seem to be doing just that.
The Rays are sending catcher Danny Jansen to the Milwaukee Brewers, selling a player they signed this offseason whose contract has a mutual option for next year. Jansen is likely a rental for the Brewers.
But the Rays aren’t finished. Ken Rosenthal reports that they are also in talks to acquire Miami Marlins catcher Nick Fortes, a 28-year-old with three years or arbitration eligibility remaining. Fortes has been a well below average hitter, but he’s graded well this season in framing and blocking.
Assuming the Fortes deal is completed, the Rays could be cashing in on a short-term asset, while replacing him with a lesser option — less offense, anyway — who comes with more years of team control.
What a very Rays thing to do.
