Morgan Wallen opted not to take part in a sketch during his appearance as Saturday Night Live’s musical guest on March 29.
The country singer, 31, was offered a cameo in a pre-taped sketch called ‘Big Dumb Line,’ but turned it down, and was replaced by Joe Jonas, PEOPLE confirms. The New York Post‘s Page Six was first to report the news.
The sketch featured first-time SNL host Mikey Madison, as well as cast members Bowen Yang, Chloe Fineman, Ego Nwodim and Sarah Sherman, singing about how New York’s hottest activity is waiting in long lines for viral sensations like pizza, cronuts and more.
Jonas, 35, appears in an all-white ensemble and sings the satirical lines, “Believe in yourself, believe in the line/You deserve this viral Greek yogurt or to try Lisa Rinna’s wine/So don’t give up/The rewards will be splendid/Did Amelia Earhart give up?/I’m not sure how that ended.”
A rep for Wallen did not immediately respond to PEOPLE’s request for comment.
Wallen, who performed his new singles “I’m the Problem” and “Just in Case” on the legendary late-night series, made headlines after he abruptly left the stage at the episode’s end, breaking a tradition in which cast members typically remain onstage as the credits roll, sharing hugs and celebrating a job well done.
He was seen leaning in to whisper something into host Madison’s ear before stepping offstage and breezing past the camera in front of him. Shortly after, the country star shared a photo of a private jet to his Instagram Stories, which he captioned, “Get me to God’s country.”

A source told Variety that Wallen enjoyed his time on SNL and did not mean to offend with his hasty exit or Instagram post. The insider said that was the same way he entered and exited Studio 8H all week during rehearsal and camera blocking.
The source also told the outlet that Wallen didn’t put much thought into how his actions would look to others, reiterating there is no drama.
“I don’t know what goes through people’s minds when they decide to do stuff like that,” cast member Kenan Thompson told Entertainment Weekly. “I don’t know if he understood the assignment or not, or if he was really feeling a certain kind of way… I thought maybe he had to go to the potty or something. It’s definitely a spike in the norm.”
Wallen previously appeared in an SNL sketch when he was the musical guest in 2020. Two months prior, he’d been uninvited from the show after photographs surfaced that showed him breaking COVID protocols by kissing multiple women and partying without a mask in Alabama.
The sketch, which took place in a bar, poked fun at the controversy, and featured Wallen receiving warnings from future versions of himself.
