‘My whole body looks better:’ Luka Dončić shares summer workout routine, defying fitness criticisms

DALLAS — Luka Dončić gave Men’s Health magazine an inside look at his summer training regimen and graced the digital cover with a slimmer physique.

“Just visually, I would say my whole body looks better,” Dončić told Men’s Health.

Much ink has been spilled over the years about whether or not Dončić’s physical fitness meets the mark required by the NBA. An ESPN report, published in the days after Nico Harrison’s infamous trade, claimed that Dončić’s weight was a primary concern of the Mavs organization.

The Men’s Health piece, published Monday, asserts that the former Maverick is in the shape of his life thanks to two-a-day workouts, a gluten-free diet and 250 grams of protein per day. He told the magazine that the Lakers’ ending their playoff run in just five games against the Timberwolves fueled his off-season transformation.

“Every summer I try my best to work on different things,” he told Men’s Health. “Obviously, I’m very competitive. This summer was just a little bit different, you know. It kind of motivated me to be even better.”

Dončić also opened up about his early days in the league. Drafted by the Mavericks at just 18 years old, Dončić said it took him several years to balance the time and travel needed to play NBA basketball with maintaining his health and happiness.

“Especially in the NBA, you travel almost all the time. You’re never home. And for me, you know, after the season, going back home, it’s a big thing, you know?” Dončić said. “When I came to the NBA, I was 18. Honestly, I didn’t know what to expect those first four or five years. Then I said, ‘I need to do this.’”

Call it Luka 2.0, skinny Luka, or a revenge bod.

Whatever you call it, Luka Dončić seems happy with the results of his off-season conditioning and he doesn’t have any plans to pull back.

“Obviously, be the best that I can be, take care of myself,” Dončić said. “This year, with my team, I think we did a huge step. But this is just the start, you know. I need to keep going. Can’t stop.”
