Myanmar, Thailand Earthquake Today Live Updates: The death toll of the earthquake that left central Myanmar in ruins has gone up to 1,644 people, the country’s military leaders said on Saturday, as desperate rescue workers raced to find survivors. The powerful earthquake struck on Friday near Mandalay, the country’s second-largest city. The death toll is expected to rise steeply. Modelling by the United States Geological Survey suggested the number of deaths will likely surpass 10,000.

Meanwhile, amid the tragedy, the military junta has continued to bomb parts of the war-torn country, according to BBC. The UN has described the attacks as “completely outrageous and unacceptable”. BBC Burmese confirmed that seven people were killed in an air strike in Naungcho in northern Shan state. This strike took place around 15:30 local time, less than three hours after the quake struck.

Which countries have sent foreign aid? India launched Operation Brahma to aid rescue and relief work, pitching in with tonnes of ration, tents, medicines. Till now, India has provided 137 tonnes of aid via air sorties and naval ships. The UK Government announced a package of up to £10 million support for the people of Myanmar. The United Nations announced a $5 million relief package. China also sent food, blankets for the affected people and a team of rescuers with drones and other equipment.
