N.J. town-by-town rainfall totals: See which towns got 4+ inches in strong thunderstorms

Severe thunderstorms that ripped across New Jersey on Thursday afternoon and evening dumped heavy rain in short spans across parts of the state.

The storms trigged numerous flash flood warnings along with severe thunderstorm and two tornado warnings.

The National Weather Service had been calling for 1 to 3 inches of rain for much of the state, but warned of localized amounts of 5 to 7 inches possible.

The highest rainfall totals reported in preliminary numbers released so far were in Manchester Township in Ocean County at 4.3 inches and Montague in Sussex County at 4.11 inches.

Note: These are preliminary numbers issued by the National Weather Service office in New Jersey at 3 a.m. Friday and from the New York office, which covers five northeastern counties, at 10 p.m. Thursday. Additional reports from the Community Collaborative Rain, Hail & Snow Network have been included.
