While April 1 is known for being a national day of jokes and pranks, April 3 is known for something a little more appetizing – burritos.
The burrito, which translates to “little donkey,” likely arose from the co-mingling of foods in Mexico with that of Europeans, who arrived after the Spanish conquest in the 16th century, wrote Jeffrey Pilcher, a professor of food history at the University of Toronto, in his book “Planet Taco: A Global History of Mexican Food.”
Burros, or donkeys, likely inspired the name “burrito” because street vendors sold burritos from baskets carried by burros. Donkeys often also bore a cylindrical bedroll similar in shape to the food we now know and love.
