Netflix adds ‘one of the best shows of the year so far’

Netflix have just added ‘one of the best shows of the year so far’ as fans say they unable to recover after binging all episodes of new series.

Devil May Cry has just been added to the streamer this week. The animated series is already climbing the charts of the most watched titles on the platform since it was made available.

At the time of writing it is the third most watched show in the US, behind true crime documentary Gone Girls: The Long Island Serial Killer ad the latest series of Love on the Spectrum. It is fifth among UK subscribers, with hit Adolescence and See No Evil also ahead of it.

The show is an adaptation of the popular video game franchise from developer and publisher Capcom, with Adi Shankar as showrunner. Shankar had previously been the creative force behind other Netflix adaptations including Castlevania and Captain Laserhawk.

In Devil May Cry, sinister forces are at play to open the portal between the human and demon realms. In the middle of it all is Dante, an orphaned demon-hunter-for-hire, unaware that the fate of both worlds hangs around his neck.

Ahead of release, Shankar made a huge promise to fans of the long running game series. He said: “I’m honored that Netflix and Capcom have entrusted me to shepherd the Devil May Cry franchise. Alex Larsen and I love these characters, we are part of the fandom, and vow to surpass the exceptionally high bar we set for ourselves.”

Reception has been mostly positive for the show with it earning a 92% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. In fact, one critic reserved high praise for the series as they claimed: “Right alongside Creature Commandos, Devil May Cry isn’t just one of the best new animated shows of 2025, it’s one of the best shows of the year so far overall.”

Many reviews hailed Netflix’s new addition as a worthy adaption with one writing: “Beyond all the Easter eggs and heart-wrenching drama, Devil May Cry is a solid, fun time. It’s beautifully gory, and almost every episode is filled with the most explosive action sequences your eyes have ever seen.”

Another added: “This is a near-perfect adaptation that celebrates the ethos of the games while pulling its own narrative weight, soaking in the sweeping, exuberant, and violent vignettes of a party that is far from over.”

It seems plenty of fans agree, with many already having binged the entire episode run. Some point out that once the series gets going, its true emotional impact is felt.

Others were quick to demand a follow up as one person said: Devil May Cry on Netflix is goated. It needs a season two. The story is unique and fun. It obviously it’s own cannon and it’s good. The music, and action sequences were amazing, and the writing was superb.”
