New York City celebrates annual St. Patrick’s Day Parade: See top photos

The 264 annual New York City St. Patrick’s Day Parade drew its usual crowds today despite windy, overcast weather.

The tradition honoring the Patron Saint of Ireland and the Archdiocese of New York has existed since before even the signing of the Declaration of Independence, with the first parade taking place fourteen years prior on March 17, 1763.

The event draws roughly 2 million spectators to watch its more than 150,000 participants annually, according to organizers, always taking the same route up Fifth Avenue beginning at East 44th Street and ending at East 79th Street.

The processional began at 11 a.m. ET sharp and ends around 4:30 p.m. It features marchers ranging from politicians and servicemembers to high school bands and pro bagpipers.
