You will need a Nintendo Switch Online membership to use GameChat, this isn’t a huge surprise, but does mean an entire button on Switch 2 could be functionally useless without a NSO subscription which I’m iffy about.

GameChat appears to be extremely comprehensive allowing you to not only talk over the Switch 2’s in-built microphone but also appear on screen via a camera feed. Which is pretty cool!

Nintendo has confirmed the new GameChat feature will allow you to chat with other players even if you’re playing different games, and thanks to a picture-in-picture feature you can even watch their Switch screen and assist them with handy tips. I imagine that’ll be great for hunting for hidden collectibles.

Yup, the “C” button is real and it’s tied to a new feature called GameChat that lets you communicate with friends and family while playing a game. There’s a microphone built into the Switch 2 so you don’t even need a headset to talk.

Mario Kart World is confirmed to be launching the same day as the Nintendo Switch 2, though what that date is hasn’t been revealed (but I expect that news will be coming very shortly…)

Mario Kart World looks truly glorious, and it’s going to shake up the series. For starters, it’s adding up to 24 racers per race, the most in series history, alongside new modes, Checkpoint Race, and the ability to “race almost anywhere” in a new Free Mode mode. You can even go for drives with friends.

2025-04-02T12:56:32.689ZThere are just 300 seconds, aka 5 minutes, until the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct goes live. If you’ve not got your stream booted up already, then now is the time to get it sorted, you don’t want to be messing around with YouTube/Twitch links when the show starts. I’ve embedded the YouTube link you need above.

Okay, so now it’s time for me to lock in my price and release date predictions. These are based purely on my gut-feeling, rather than any insider information (I swear!). I think Nintendo Switch 2 will cost $399 and launch the week of June 23, most likely on the Friday (June 27). Let’s see if I’m right or wrong very soon.

2025-04-02T12:50:38.384ZThe Switch 2 Direct is 10 minutes away, and there’s already 230,000 people (and counting) watching on YouTube alone. Add in additional platforms like Twitch, and I suspect more than a million people are going to be watching live.

2025-04-02T12:44:58.987ZAlways one to get ahead of the game (in)famous accessory maker Dbrand is taking reservations of its third-party Switch 2 case called Killswitch later today.

If that name sounds vaguely familiar to you, it’s because the case was actually confirmed before Nintendo’s January reveal video which announced the Switch 2 to the world. Essentially confirming Switch 2 before Nintendo is very on-brand for Dbrand. If you’re confident you’ll be buying Switch 2 at launch and want to lock in a case, head over to Dbrand now and reverse yours.

The countdown has finished and Nintendo has pushed the big red button to set it’s Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 stream LIVE. Okay, so for now, it’s just a splash screen with the event timings (remember it starts in 20 minutes at 6 a.m. PT / 9 a.m. ET / 2 p.m. BST), but it means we’re one step closer, and even this holding screen has got my hype levels rising remarkably quick.

Nintendo published games are likely to make up the lion’s share of software showcased during the Direct, but if I could have just one third-party it would be Elden Ring. Yes, I’ve played this open-world RPG three times already (including on Steam Deck), but it’s my current game of the generation, and I’ll happily buy it for a fourth time on the Switch 2. And if I’m allowed to be greedy and pick another third-party port, I’d love a Switch 2 version of Lies of P as well.

Let’s take a quick pivot into the world of handheld PC gaming. Earlier this week ASUS beat Nintendo the punch by announcing its own next-generation gaming handheld, and it could be set to rival the Steam Deck in this arena. Our full report has all the details, but it looks like 2025 will see at least a couple of new portable devices arrive, so gamers will have plenty of fresh choices.

2025-04-02T12:30:24.772ZThe Switch 2 event begins in 30 minutes. After literally years of rumors, leaks and speculation, we’re just half-an-hour away from having the Switch 2 details we’ve been craving for far too long. Now is the time to clear your calendar, and get settled in, this showcase is likely to be one we’re talking about for a while!

We can say with certainty the Direct will include Switch 2 hardware and software reveals, but could we also see a major update to Nintendo Switch Online? According to well-known leaker NateTheHate we just might.

In Nate’s latest podcast episode, they claim that GameCube games are set to be added to the NSO game catalog. This would be a pretty huge deal as Nintendo fans have been begging for GC titles as part of the service for years.

It would also be the perfect time to add this feature as Nintendo Switch Online is almost certainly going to transfer over to Switch 2 (some rumors suggest a price hike too), and GameCube games would be the perfect perk to entice early adopters of the system to fork out for a Switch Online subscription.

Nate also claims that various blockbuster third-party games will be ported over to Switch 2 with GOTY juggernaut Baldur’s Gate 2 among them.

One of the more interesting reveals in last week’s Nintendo Direct was Nintendo’s new “Virtual Game Cards.”

What are Virtual Game Cards? They effectively turn your digital games into “game cards” that you can lend to family group members for up to two weeks. The new feature also enables you to move games across Switch systems.

Basically, Nintendo finally has a library that you can take with you where you “eject” digital games from one system and can play them on another. We imagine this will come in handy if you want to transfer your library from the first-generation Switch to a new Switch 2 system.

Virtual Game Cards are coming in April via an update, and they’re going to be available on both the original Switch and the Switch 2. Will today’s Switch 2 showcase give us further information on Virtual Game Cards? We’ll know soon.

Yes, we’re getting a little bit ahead of ourselves here, but the TG team is already speculating about the possibility of future Nintendo Switch 2 models.

Remember, the first-generation Switch ulimately came in three flavors: The base model, a Lite version and another with an OLED panel. Could Switch 2 follow a similar pathway, or will Nintendo opt to focus on just a single SKU?

However, whatever the case, we definitely don’t expect any details about alternative Switch 2 models during the Direct. The Switch Lite launched in 2019, more than two years after the base Switch, and the Switch OLED didn’t arrive until fall 2021. For now, we can safely assume Switch 2 will come in a single model, with perhaps a few different colors of Joy-Cons to choose from.

Don’t think that today’s Switch 2 event is a one-and-done deal. While this Direct is the flagship event, it will be followed by not one, but two Nintendo Treehouse streams which will delve even further into all things Switch 2.

The first will be held on Thursday, April 3 at 10 a.m. ET / 7 a.m. PT / 3 p.m. BST, followed by one on Friday, April 4 in the same time slot. These two presentations promise to include “hands-on Switch 2 gameplay”.

If you’ve never heard of Nintendo Treehouse, it’s a livestream format that typically sees developers and/or Nintendo executives interviewed while showcasing their latest games. Nintendo has previously held Treehouse streams during popular gaming events such as the (now defunct) E3.

We don’t know exactly how long these Treehouse streams will run but they look set to offer an extended look at some of the games revealed during the upcoming Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 presentation on April 2.

Just don’t expect any groundbreaking new announcements, those will be saved for Switch 2 Direct, but if you spot a new game you want to see more of during the showcase, Nintendo Treehouse may offer an even longer look.

While much of the focus today will be on the Nintendo Switch 2 hardware, let’s not forget that the lineup of launch software is equally important. After all, a video game console is only as good as the video games you can play on it.

Recently, I put together my Nintendo Switch 2 games wishlist. It contains some expected picks (Mario Kart, Metroid Prime) alongside a few slightly more left-field choices like at least one new Nintendo IP and even a party game.

If Switch 2 wants to really impress me and convince me to put down my cash on day one, I’d love to see a remastered version of The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom. The stuttering framerate and muddy image quality were the only reasons I didn’t give the game full marks in my review. Imagine that masterpiece but with a stable framerate and clean textures. Wow!

We know the date and time of the Nintendo Switch 2 Direct (today, April 2 at 9 a.m. ET), and thanks to a press release directly (pun intended) from Nintendo delivered yesterday (April 1), we also know the rough runtime of the event.

In the press release, Nintendo confirms “the livestream will be around 60 minutes long.” That gives us a full hour of reveals and insight into the console. The equivalent event for the current Switch was the same length, and it was packed with new games, so I’m expecting a similarly meaty showcase today.

2025-04-02T11:03:28.543ZAre you ready?! pic.twitter.com/MbzSPo6iEmApril 2, 2025

Nintendo of America President & CCO, Doug Bowser, has taken to X (the social media site once repped by a blue bird!) to hype up the Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 showcase.

Naturally, the exec is giving nothing away merely asking Nintendo fans “Are you ready?” And frankly, yes. Yes, we are very much ready to learn more about the Nintendo Switch 2! Consider this your 2-hour warning. It’s almost go-time.

While the Nintendo Direct should give us a better look at what the Switch 2 upgrades are in store, there is one feature that’s up in the air: 4K resolution.

Recently, we’ve heard that Switch 2 dev kits reportedly lack 4K output. Previous rumors suggested that the next-gen console would support 4K resolution in docked mode, with handheld mode offering 1080p.

Now, this doesn’t automatically mean the Switch 2 won’t support 4K, as it was only in “some” early dev kits. Plus, Nintendo may release multiple versions of pre-release tools to developers.

Either way, it won’t be long until we (hopefully) find out. I know I’m rooting for 4K resolution at 60 frames per second!

2025-04-02T10:19:05.305ZNintendo has teased Switch 2’s new C button ahead of the Direct tomorrow https://t.co/4SyXfifn56 pic.twitter.com/DAKZXPJnGCApril 1, 2025

We’ve been hearing rumors of a “C button” for the Nintendo Switch 2 as early as late 2024 before the console was even officially confirmed or revealed.

Nintendo has yet to confirm its existence on the record, but the evidence is piling up, and we may just be a few hours away from finally learning what this mysterious button does.

While Nintendo hasn’t commented on the record about the C button, in a video posted on the new Nintendo Today! app (via Nintendo Everything), we appear to have got our first official look at the input.

But what does the button do exactly? It’s possible the “C” stands for “Chat,” allowing you to speak to other players online. Another popular theory is it stands for “Community,” and is your link to Switch 2’s networking features.

The Nintendo Direct: Nintendo Switch 2 is less than 3 hours away, but ahead of the live presentation there are a few questions we hope Nintendo answers during the Direct on Wednesday:

  • Display – What kind of display will the console feature. We hoped for an OLED panel but recent rumors point toward an LCD screen, possibly to save costs.
  • Joy-Con Mouse – How does that teased mouse mode work? The controllers are supposed to have an optical sensor, but what will it be capable of
  • C button – What does that C button do? One rumor claimed it was for connecting a Switch 1 as second screen, but most point to some sort of social or chat component.
  • Power – It’s supposed to have a new Nvidia chip, but how much more powerful will the Switch 2 be?
  • Docked mode – Is the new dock different and what does it enable? Rumor point to a beefier dock for more powerful gaming
  • Price – Nintendo has said the right things about keeping the Switch 2 affordable, but how much will it really cost?
  • Launch games – Finally, what games will we be able to play beyond Mario Kart 9. A console is only as good as its games.

Over recent weeks dozens of rumors have floated around regarding the Switch 2 price. We’ve seen tip-offs claiming it’ll be as cheap as $299 (unlikely) and as expensive as $499 (also unlikely), but ahead of the Switch 2 Direct yet more price rumors have arrived, and this time we have conflicting reports.

Over in the U.K., retailer SimplyGames has listed the Switch 2 as costing £499.99, which is almost double the price of the original Switch (£259.99) and £190 more than the Switch OLED (£309.99). For our non-British readers that price converts to $646 / AU$1,024, a price that includes 20% sales tax.

Meanwhile, Spanish retailer Xtralife has just listed the Switch for €439.99, which is €110 more than the original Switch (€329.99) and €90 more than the OLED (€349). That converts to $474 / £367 / AU$752.

Which price is correct? That we won’t know until later today. Perhaps both of them will be wide of the mark, and will prove to be merely a placeholder price. Personally, I’m very much hoping the the £499 price isn’t accurate. That would make the Switch 2 cost the same as a PS5 Slim which seems far too pricey.

One of my most vivid childhood gaming memories is getting a Nintendo DS and a copy of Nintendogs for Christmas in 2005. I spent countless hours caring for my digital puppies, and can still remember the names of a few of them.

My nostalgia aside, it appears that Nintendo might be bringing the Nintendogs series back potentially on the Switch 2. According to a new post on the GamingLeaksAndRumors subreddit, Nintendo has recently filed a new trademark for Nintendogs, which could be a sign the series will return.

However, it’s important to note that companies routinely update/renew trademarks to protect their IP (intellectual property) so this could just be a case of Nintendo ensuring they continue to own the Nintendogs name rather than a hint that a Switch 2 version is in the works. But you never know…

While we’re talking Switch 2 pre-orders, we have to address scalpers and resellers. Unfortunately, it’s a near certainty they will be looking to hoover up as much launch stock as possible to sell at a massively inflated markup.

Fortunately, Nintendo has confirmed it’s “making preparations” to ensure the upcoming launch of the Nintendo Switch 2 won’t be spoiled by scalpers.

During an interview with Japanese publication Nikkei (and translated by the folks over at VGC), Nintendo’s president Shuntaro Furukawa was quizzed on the company’s plans to ensure a smooth launch and avoid the rampant stock shortages that plagued the original Switch’s first-year on the market, and which subsequently resurfaced in 2020 and 2021.

“We will take all possible measures based on the experience we have accumulated to date (regarding scalpers and the like). We are making preparations,” said Furukawa.

While there was no further elaboration on what these specific “measures” will be, it’s at least comforting to know that Nintendo is aware of the potential problem and taking preemptive steps to address the problem before it becomes a major issue.

Of course, whether said measures will work remains to be seen…

One of the biggest questions now is “When will Switch 2 pre-orders go live?” And while we can’t give a firm answer quite yet, we do have a few clues.

Initially, it seemed that Switch 2 pre-orders were set to go live today (April 2) directly following the live event. This seemed to be confirmed when Best Buy Canada published (and then quickly deleted) a blog post claiming Switch 2 pre-orders would go live following the Nintendo Direct.

However, Tom Henderson at Insider Gaming has suggested we might have a whole other week to wait. The well-known industry insider claims to have seen “internal emails and documents” from a source at a major U.S. retailer which point to Switch 2 pre-orders beginning on April 9.

This would be later than previously expected, but would at least give eager gamers a week to get ready for the pre-order drop which will be intense.

Henderson also reports that retailers expect Switch 2 pre-order allocations to sell out on the same day, so be sure to bookmark our Switch 2 pre-order hub for the latest updates, and those important retailer links when the time comes.
