With his 101st singles win at Wimbledon on Monday, Novak Djokovic advanced to his 16th quarter-final at the grass-court Grand Slam and moved within four victories of equalling Roger Federer‘s record 105 match wins at the event. The Swiss legend was on hand for Djokovic’s 1-6, 6-4, 6-4, 6-4 triumph against Alex de Minaur, after which the Serbian paid homage to the eight-time Wimbledon champion.
“It’s probably the first time he’s watching me and I’ve won the match,” Djokovic said in his on-court interview. “In the last couple, I lost the match, so it’s good to break the curse.
“It’s great to have Roger here, a huge champion and someone I admired and respected a lot. We’ve shared the stage for so many years and it’s great to have him back in his most successful and favourite tournament, no doubt.”
De Minaur pushed Djokovic hard on Centre Court, with the Aussie racing through the opening set and leading 4-1 in the fourth with a break point for 5-1.
“It was a very difficult encounter, some very challenging moments for me,” Djokovic said, before referencing Federer in the stands. “Sometimes, I wish I had a serve and volley and a nice touch from the gentleman who is standing right there. That would help,” he joked.
Djokovic was all too familiar with the singular skills of the Swiss. Their 50 Lexus ATP Head2Head matchups are the second most of any rivals in ATP Tour history, second only to Djokovic and Rafael Nadal (59).
Djokovic will next face 22nd seed Flavio Cobolli in the quarter-finals as he continues his bid to match Federer’s record eight Wimbledon men’s singles titles.
