Phillies add Bader to OF mix in 2nd trade with Twins (source)

The Phillies are acquiring veteran outfielder Harrison Bader in a trade with the Twins, a source told MLB.com’s Todd Zolecki on Thursday. The teams have not confirmed the deal.

Philadelphia is sending outfielder Hendry Mendez (Phillies’ No. 12 prospect) and righty Geremy Villoria to Minnesota in exchange, per source.

It’s been a significant bounceback year for Bader, who struggled at the plate over the past three years. He’s already matched his highest home run total (12) from last year, and he’s posted his highest walk rate (26.4%) since 2020.

Bader was initially intended as a center-field backup for Byron Buxton and a right-handed complement to the Twins’ lefty corner outfielders, Matt Wallner and Trevor Larnach, but he forced his way into just about starter-level playing time due to his resurgent offense and still-outstanding defense.

Despite spending very little time on the corners before this year, Bader has adjusted extremely well to moving out of center this year. He’s played a high-level left field with a slew of acrobatic catches.

A right-handed hitter, Bader has never been a high-average hitter, but his occasional power makes him a valuable offensive threat when he’s going well. He also brings a certain bravado and attitude that can be infectious.

Bader has significant October experience, appearing in five postseasons in his career with the Cardinals and Mets, where he’s posted a lifetime .808 OPS that includes five homers in 72 plate appearances. He’s making $4.75 million this year, with a mutual option on his contract for 2026.
