Washington Capitals star Alex Ovechkin has broken Wayne Gretzky’s NHL career goals record with No. 895. Ovechkin, whose unstoppable shot has tormented NHL goalies for years, broke the record on the road, but he’s forever Washington’s. Gretzky, linked with Washington’s captain by more than just the record, joined Ovechkin to celebrate the moment. Ovechkin’s longtime sidekick, Nicklas Backstrom, was in the crowd, too. Backstrom is Ovechkin’s most celebrated center, and knows better than anyone what he needs on the ice.
More on the Capitals: It has been a surprising season for Coach Spencer Carbery’s Washington Capitals. Washington also overhauled its blue line with Jakob Chychrun and Matt Roy and traded for goaltender Logan Thompson, who eventually signed an extension to stay in Washington.
