Police officer among four killed in New York office building shooting
- A New York City police officer – whose wife is pregnant with their third child – is among four people killed in a shooting inside a Midtown Manhattan high-rise during Monday rush hour.
- Police say the suspect, 27-year-old Shane Devon Tamura, travelled from Las Vegas but his motive is unclear. He was later found dead with a “self-inflicted” wound, police say, with more ammunition found in his car.
- The gunman walked into the office building armed with a rifle before spraying bullets in the lobby and on an upper floor, police said.
- The shooting – in the centre of the most populous US city – sent pedestrians running for cover as police warned of an active shooter.

- Accounting firm KPMG US has just released a statement on the attack that took place in Manhattan.
- The company has offices in the skyscraper. It is unclear whether any of its employees were harmed by the gunman.
- “Our hearts go out to the victims of this horrific act and their families,” a KPMG spokesman said in a statement to BBC News.
- “We are incredibly grateful for the bravery of building security and law enforcement.”
- The building also hosts dozens of other businesses, including the National Football League and investment firm Blackstone.
- Here are the top lines from the press conference led by New York City mayor Eric Adams just a moment ago:
- Four people including a police officer were killed in a shooting in Manhattan
- New York City officials named the suspect as Shane Tamura, a 27-year-old from Nevada – he died of an “apparent self-inflicted gunshot wound”, officials say
- As soon as Tamura entered the building’s lobby, he “immediately” opened fire on an NYPD officer
- He took an escalator to the floor where Ruden building management has an office, and fired as he walked down the hallway
- His motive is yet to be established, officials say, adding Tamura – with a licence to own arms in Nevada – had “documented mental health history”

- The news conference is now over.
- Police and local officials took multiple questions from reporters.
- Authorities ended the news conference by saying it is still too early to know about the suspect’s motive or any connections he might have to New York or those who were shot in the high-rise building.
- Tisch is answering more questions from reporters.
- She describes the weapons involved in the incident.
- There was an M4 rifle, she says, and there was a revolver with magazines of ammunition found in the suspect’s vehicle.
- She also confirms he had a driver’s license from the state of Nevada.
- Questions for the authorities have begun.
- Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch is asked about the police officers at the building. She says two were assigned as “paid detail”.
- This allows companies to hire officers in uniform to provide extra security, she explains.
- Mayor Adams stresses all of the information is under “active investigation”.
- An official from the FBI is now speaking.
- FBI Special Agent-in-Charge Chris Raya says the investigation is being spearheaded by the NYPD, but that the FBI stands ready to assist.
- He says that an initial background check “has not revealed any information about this subject”.

- The shooter is believed to be Shane Tamura, aged 27.
- He had a Las Vegas address.
- Tamura travelled “cross-country” to get to New York – through Colorado on 26 July, Nebraska and Iowa on 27 July then Columbia, New Jersey as recently as this afternoon.
- The vehicle entered New York shortly after, Police Commissioner Jessica Tisch says.
- According to officials in Las Vegas, the shooting suspect has a “documented mental health history”, Tisch says.
- “His motives are still under investigation, and we are working to understand why he targeted this particular location,” Tisch adds.
- The building where the shooting took place was a commercial office building with many tenants, including the NFL and KPMG, she says.
- At the elevators, he shot a security guard, and another man in the lobby.
- He then called an elevator, and when it came down to the lobby, he stood aside allowing a woman who was in the lift to “walk past unharmed,” according to NYPD Commissioner Tisch.
- He then exited on the floor where Ruden building management has an office, firing as he walked down the hallway.
- He then took his own life there, where his body was later found by officers.
- NYPD commissioner Jessica Tisch is now speaking about what took place inside the building, describing surveillance footage that captures the attack.
- She says the suspect can be seen parking a BMW outside and openly carrying an M4 rifle into the building. She says he enters the building’s lobby and “immediately” opens fire on an NYPD officer.
- He then shoots at a woman who took cover behind a pillar. He then started “spraying” the lobby with gunfire, she says.

- He is among the six total shot.
- “No words can describe this active evil” the Mayor added.
