Popular rapper sentenced to life in prison on prostitution, other charges

It’s the end of the road for the rapper known as Cash Out, as he’ll be spending a long time behind bars.

On Monday, he was sentenced to life in prison, in addition to 70 years after being found guilty in his RICO and sexual assault case.

The rapper, whose real name is John-Michael Gibson, was found guilty on Friday in his Atlanta trial. He was then sentenced to life in prison for a rape charge and was slapped with an additional 70 years for RICO and other convictions, per WSB-TV Atlanta.

The sentences will be concurrent.

The charges include rape, aggravated sodomy and violating the Racketeer Influenced and Corrupt Organizations Act for leading a prostitution enterprise, a spokesperson for the Fulton County District Attorney’s Office told USA Today.

He was also convicted of two counts of trafficking a person, pimping, pandering, keeping a place of prostitution, battery, possession of a firearm during commission of felony and other crimes, Fulton County media relations director Pallavi Bailey told the news outlet.

Hailing from Columbus, Georgia, the rapper saw success in the early 2010s when he debuted his hit single, “Cashin’ Out,” which was No. 1 on the Billboard Rap Airplay chart. He achieved another hit with “She Twerkin” two years later, when he released his album, “Let’s Get It.”

In addition to his sentencing, his mother Linda Smith was also sentenced to 30 years on RICO charges, while his cousin Tyrone Taylor received a life sentence in prison plus 70 years.

The trial began two months ago, after Cash Out, his mother and cousin were accused of coercing and forcing women into sex work and exploiting women for profit over the course of several years. Prosecutors were able to use evidence that included text messages from eight cell phones.

Charges were first brought against the rapper in June 2023, and officials claimed he used his celebrity status to carry out his crimes.
