Sean Manaea is being shut down for two weeks after once again experiencing discomfort in his right oblique. The Mets announced that the lefty starter got a PRP injection on Monday to deal with the inflammation.
This setback comes as Manaea was ramping up his throwing program. The Mets starter initially strained his oblique before he could make any preseason starts, so he still would have to go through a full “spring training” before being able to take the ball for New York. That would make an April return impossible and now one in May increasingly unlikely.
Manaea was a stalwart for the Mets pitching staff in 2024, when he made all 32 starts, going 12-6 with a 3.47 E.R.A. Manaea became the ace of the staff once he lowered his arm slot after watching Chris Sale pitch against the team in July.
Heightened success, both in the second half and in the postseason led to Manaea throwing a career-high 181.2 innings, as well as an additional 19 in October. That increased workload led to him experiencing some fatigue late in the year. The Mets signed Manaea to a three-year, $75 million deal in the offseason.
