Severe storms prompt ground stop of Atlanta’s airport

ATLANTA — A ground stop was issued at Hartsfield-Jackson International Airport on Monday due to severe thunderstorms moving through the area.

According to the Federal Aviation Administration, the ground stop was issued just before 11:30 a.m. and, at this time, is expected to last until 3:15 p.m.

A Weather Impact Alert has been issued for the potential threat of heavy rain, damaging wind and low tornado risk.

FightAware has reported a total of 888 delays and 44 cancellations at Atlanta airport as of 2:15 p.m. Departure delays are at an average of one hour and eight minutes and increasing. Delta Air Lines is experiencing the most delays at 614 flights and 22 cancellations. Endeavor Air has 102 delays and one cancellation. Southwest Airlines has 50 delays and six cancellations.

At 11:30 a.m., a Severe Thunderstorm Watch until 1 p.m. was expanded to virtually all of metro Atlanta and north Georgia.

Several Severe Thunderstorm Warnings have been issued as the storm line moves east. At 12:35 p.m., a Tornado Warning was issued for Fayette, Coweta and Clayton counties, including the cities of Fayetteville, Peachtree City and Tyrone. 

That was extended to Fayette, Coweta, Henry, Rockdale, DeKalb and Clayton counties until 1:15 p.m.
