LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — Shannon Sharpe says he will sue for defamation the woman who accused the football hall of famer of sexual assault and battery in her own lawsuit filed in Nevada this week.
In a video published Tuesday, Sharpe denied the allegations outlined in the civil complaint brought by attorney Tony Buzbee on behalf of a woman identified only as Jane Doe, who is seeking more than $50 million in damages.
The 13-page complaint alleges that Sharpe raped her multiple times throughout a nearly two-year “rocky consensual relationship” and recorded as well as shared their sexual encounters without her consent.
“A woman can say ‘yes’ to consensual sexual relations with a man ninety-nine times, but when she says ‘no’ even once, that ‘no’ means no,” the complaint reads. “Defendant Shannon Sharpe, a man who is accustomed to getting what he wants, completely fails to understand this basic concept.”
Sharpe called the lawsuit a “shakedown” and accused Buzbee of planning to release a 30-second clip of a sex tape and challenged him to release the entire video.
Buzbee and the plaintiff “want $50 million,” he said. “What they’re getting is sued for defamation and trying to take me down.”
Lanny Davis, Sharpe’s attorney, also spoke with reporters on Tuesday. He said Sharpe offered the plaintiff a settlement of up to $10 million before the suit was filed, according to Front Office Sports.
Sharpe played 14 seasons in the NFL and was inducted into the Pro Football Hall of Fame in 2011. He currently appears on ESPN and hosts the podcast “Club Shay Shay.”
