Sharpshooter Tucker DeVries expected to follow new head coach Darian DeVries to Indiana

Indiana announced Tuesday the hiring of Darian DeVries as the program’s next head coach. DeVries likely won’t be headed to Bloomington alone, though. According to Jeff Goodman of The Field of 68, DeVries’ son and one of the nation’s elite shooters, Tucker DeVriesis expected to follow him to IU.

DeVries played in just eight games this past season at West Virginia before suffering a season-ending injury. He will apply for a medical redshirt waiver, and if approved, which is the expectation, DeVries would be granted an additional fifth year of eligibility.

Despite the season-ending upper-body injury, DeVries made the most of his eight games with the Mountaineers. The 6-foot-7 guard averaged 14.9 points, 4.9 rebounds, 2.8 assists, 1.8 steals and 1.5 blocks in 34.5 minutes per game. DeVries shot 41.2 percent from the field, 47.3 percent from 3-point range and 82.1 percent at the free throw line.

With DeVries in the lineup, West Virginia notched a pair of quad-1 victories over Gonzaga and Arizona at Battle 4 Atlantis. In the 83-76 overtime win over Arizona, DeVries scored 26 points and shot 8-of-12 from 3-point range. In the 86-78 overtime win over Gonzaga, DeVries scored 16 points with six rebounds, four assists, four blocks and two steals in 42 minutes.

In four seasons, DeVries has appeared in 112 career games and made 105 career starts, averaging 17.7 points, 5.6 rebounds, 2.5 assists and 1.2 steals per game. He is a career 36.7 percent 3-point shooter on 6.7 attempts per game, and a 50.1 percent shooter from 2-point range.

While at Drake, DeVries was a two-time MVC Player of the Year and MVC Tournament Most Outstanding Player (2022-23, 2023-24) along with AP All-American Honorable Mention (2023-24) and MVC Freshman of the Year (2021-22). Entering the 2024-25 season, DeVries was the only active Division I men’s basketball player to average at least 20.0 points, 6.0 rebounds, 3.0 assists and 1.5 steals per game.

DeVries helped lead Drake to an 80-26 overall record, two MVC Championships and two NCAA Tournament appearances. His father, Darian, was the coach of the Bulldogs for all three seasons before taking the West Virginia job.

As a transfer last offseason, DeVries was ranked by 247Sports as the No. 6 overall transfer and No. 1 transfer small forward. He quickly followed his father to West Virginia and committed to the Mountaineers.

As a class of 2021 recruit, DeVries was rated a four-star prospect by 247Sports, the No. 101-ranked national recruit, No. 19-ranked small forward and No. 2-ranked player from Iowa. DeVries was named 2021 Iowa Mr. Basketball and Gatorade Iowa Boys Basketball Player of the Year after leading Waukee High School to a state championship.

Below is Darian DeVries’ full press release statement:

“This is unquestionably one of the top jobs in America. As someone who grew up in the Midwest loving the game of basketball, I’ve always admired the IU Basketball program for its championship-level success, tradition, and fan support. There’s a passion to succeed at the very highest levels both within the Big Ten and in the NCAA Tournament, and that’s a desire that as a coach I share. On top of that, the alignment is there on a department and university level to make that happen.

“I’m excited for this opportunity and am ready to work relentlessly to assemble a staff and a roster that competes for championships.”
