Two people were killed in a Monday morning shooting at the Grand Sierra Resort in Reno, Nevada, and at least three others were hospitalized, including the suspected shooter following a confrontation with the police, officials said.
Officers responded to reports of an active shooter near the resort’s valet parking area at 7:25 a.m., Reno police Chief Kathryn Nance confirmed in a press conference on Monday. All gunfire occurred outside of the building, with the crime scene extending around the corner of the building to the north side of the property.

“There was no information provided as to why this happened,” Nance said. “Just that there was an active shooter in this area that we responded to.”
Within five minutes of arriving on scene, officers located the suspect and an officer-involved shooting occurred. The suspect, described as an adult male, was taken to the hospital. Neither his condition nor his identity have been released.

SFGATE contacted the Reno Police Department for an official count of those injured or killed; they did not respond in time for publication. The Associated Press reported two people were killed and at least three others were injured in the attack. Nance added that several officers sustained minor, non-gunshot injuries but are expected to recover.
Officials have given no motive for the attack and it is no known whether the suspect knew the victims.
As emergency personnel secured the scene, city officials addressed the weight of the tragedy.
“Tragically, lives have been lost this morning in Reno in yet another act of senseless gun violence,” Reno City Councilmember Devon Reese said in a statement. “… My heart breaks for the victims, their families, and our entire community. Reno is strong — but we are not immune to the epidemic of gun violence gripping this nation. We cannot accept this as normal. Not here. Not anywhere.”

The valet parking area remains closed for extended investigation. Although earlier this morning, authorities warned people not to go to the casino, Nance later clarified that the casino itself remains open and is accessible through other entrances, just not the main valet entrance. The Grand Sierra Resort has Reno’s largest casino floor and nearly 2,000 hotel rooms and suites. The casino is located near the Reno Tahoe International Airport.
The Sparks Police Department is taking over the investigation into the incident, per standard protocol for officer-involved shootings in the region. The Washoe County Sheriff’s Office and Nevada Highway Patrol also assisted with securing the scene and identifying additional victims.
