Shooting at Nevada casino resort leaves at least 3 dead, multiple people injured; suspect in custody

At least three people were killed and three others were injured when a gunman appeared to randomly open fire on a group outside a casino in Reno, Nevada, and a motorist, authorities said.

Reno police responded to an active shooter report at Grand Sierra Resort around 7:25 a.m. local time, the department told Fox News Digital.

The unidentified gunman was seen walking into the parking lot of the casino when he approached the valet area, Chris Crawforth, the chief of the Sparks Police Department, which is leading the investigation into the shooting, said during a Monday news conference.

Upon reaching the valet area, the suspect pointed a handgun at a group of people. The gun initially malfunctioned before the gunman was able to fire, Crawforth said. One person was pronounced dead at the scene. Four others were taken to a hospital, where a second victim was pronounced dead.

After firing on the group, the gunman fled and was confronted by a casino security guard, who opened fire. The suspect continued to flee before fatally shooting another person driving through the parking lot, police said.

Within 2.5 minutes of reports of the shooting, authorities said officers located the suspect and a shootout occurred. The suspected guman was taken to a hospital where he remains in critical condition, police said.

In total, six people were shot. Of the three who survived, two were listed in critical condition and one was released from the hospital. A motive for the shooting has not been determined, authorities said.

“We have no reason to believe there’s a connection between any of the victims and the suspect,” Crawforth said. “And we have no known motive by the suspect.”

The suspect had multiple magazines with him at the time of the shooting, police said.

In her remarks, Reno Mayor Hillary Schieve noted the random nature of Monday’s events.

“I do want to give a reminder that life is very, very fragile,” she said. “So please tell your family, your loved ones, your friends, that you love them every day, because life can be very unpredictable.”

Nevada Gov. Joe Lombardo said his office was aware of the shooting and was monitoring the situation. The Nevada Department of Public Safety was assisting local authorities, he said.

“While we wait for more information, please join me and Donna in praying for the victims and their families and for our brave first responders,” he wrote on X.
