Snell K’s 8 in sharp return from IL

TAMPA — With the return of Blake Snell from the injured list, the Dodgers are finally working with something resembling a full-strength rotation for the first time this season.

Snell made his first start since April 2 in Saturday afternoon’s 4-0 loss to the Rays. He surrendered a pair of homers to Yandy Díaz but otherwise looked quite sharp, allowing three runs on five hits across five innings. He struck out eight and did not give up a walk in his 86-pitch outing (57 strikes).

Díaz welcomed Snell from the IL with a leadoff homer in the first inning, then added on a two-run shot in the third. Both long balls were somewhat of a George M. Steinbrenner Field special, with the first traveling a Statcast-projected 326 feet and the second going 341 feet. The former would only have been a homer at the Rays’ temporary home, while the latter would also have left the park at Yankee Stadium and Daikin Park.

Snell got one more crack at Díaz, giving up a base hit with two outs in the fifth. But the Dodgers’ lefty got Ha-Seong Kim to fly out to end his outing.

Snell only made two starts before going on the IL with left shoulder inflammation on April 6. At that point, he wasn’t expected to miss much time. He began throwing a week after being placed on the IL, only to be shut down after one bullpen session. He said it took until the end of May for him to be able to play catch without feeling any lingering pain in his shoulder.

It took until the second day of August, but the Dodgers’ rotation at last resembles the group they envisioned having heading into this season. Yoshinobu Yamamoto has anchored the group since Opening Day, joined by Clayton Kershaw, Tyler Glasnow, Shohei Ohtani and now Snell.

After Thursday’s trade that sent Dustin May to the Red Sox, Emmet Sheehan figures to round out the rotation as the sixth starter — although he could have some long relief outings mixed in — at least until Roki Sasaki returns from the IL sometime around the end of August.
