Southie brawls, underage drinking, cops being assaulted at Boston’s St. Patrick’s Day Parade: Police reports

What should be a joyous day celebrating Irish heritage in Southie yet again devolved into chaos at times, as police made numerous arrests and were allegedly assaulted by underage drinkers.

Boston Police provided the arrest reports a day after the St. Patrick’s Day Parade, as many partygoers were set to be arraigned on several charges.

Those suspects included 18-year-old Jake Ashman, who police said will be charged with assault and battery on a police officer, disorderly conduct, resisting arrest, and disturbing the peace.

Ashman’s girlfriend was reportedly having a “mental health episode” when officers came over to help her. Ashman in response allegedly told a cop to “back up” and “let her go.” He also reportedly called the officer a “fat (expletive).”

“The Officer attempted compliance control by grabbing her wrist, and the suspect, Jacob, tried to intervene,” the police report states. “Officer told the suspect (Jacob) to back up, or he’d be arrested; he responded by saying, ‘I don’t give a (expletive),’ & did not comply, and pushed the Officer away from the victim and Officer attempted to gain control of the suspect but was punched in the face.”

Another officer tried to place Ashman in cuffs, but he was also punched.

Ashman again allegedly punched the first cop on the back of the head, and pushed his head down to the pavement. Ashman was eventually detained.

Another suspect at the parade was arrested and charged with assault and battery on a police officer. Cops at the end of the parade saw a fight on the sidewalk outside the Dorgan’s Package Store.

As the officers arrived at the fight, two people said the drunken juvenile suspect had been “causing problems attempting to start numerous fights.” The cops told the male suspect to leave the area and go home because he was too intoxicated. The suspect then walked into the liquor store.

“Officers observed the suspect exit the store with a large bulge in his groin area,” the police report states. “The suspect came back up to Officers and began to argue with Officers about respect and referred to Officer as ‘baby.’ Officers attempted to walk away from the suspect but he continued to follow them around.

“Officers again told the suspect to leave the area numerous times,” the report adds. “The suspect then poked Officer in the chest with his right index finger. Officers then brought the suspect to the ground and placed him in handcuffs. During a search of the suspect, Officers observed two open alcohol bottles tucked into the front of his pants.”

Police confiscated loads and loads of gallon jugs of alcohol at the parade, also known as BORGs (blackout rage gallons).

Officers were tasked with enforcing the city ordinance violation of drinking alcohol in public, and cops gave out numerous citations as people walked on public roadways and sidewalks with open containers of alcohol.

Meanwhile, an officer tried to stop an underage male suspect who was allegedly carrying a gray Coors Light can in his right hand.

“Officer observed the male, without looking back take several steps, drop the can of beer causing the contents to spill onto the sidewalk and continue to walk,” the police report reads.

The juvenile was then detained.

“Officer requested for the male’s identification to which he replied ‘I don’t have one,’ ” the police report reads. “Officer inquired how old the male was, to which he replied ‘I don’t remember.’ ”

Police determined that he was 16 years old, and they arrested him for minor in possession of alcohol.

Also, while monitoring a large crowd of drunken juveniles, officers arrested a suspect inside the Medal of Honor Park. The suspect appeared to be instigating a fight inside the park.

“While walking away, (the suspect) suddenly swung with right hand at the side view mirror of a City of Boston Trash Truck owned by the Department of Parks and Recreation,” the police report states. “This malicious destruction of government property was observed by Officer and Employee who was sitting inside the vehicle.”

Police responded to many other drunken brawls and made additional arrests.
