Dolphins draft updates from Round 4-7: Miami lands QB Quinn Ewers, DT picks on final day

The Miami Dolphins were on the clock a lot on the final day of the 2025 NFL draft, making six picks over the last four rounds.

GM Chris Grier made a trade to take the Dolphins from two picks on Day 2 to one, taking guard Jonah Savaiinaea after grabbing defensive tackle Kenneth Grant in the first round. He bulked up the defensive line even more with defensive tackles Jordan Phillips and Zeek Biggers, and bolstered the depleted secondary by taking cornerback Jason Marshall Jr. and safety Dante Trader Jr.

Miami also got a backup quarterback for Tua Tagovailoa, taking Texas’ Quinn Ewers in the seventh round. Running back Ollie Gordon II rounds out the 2025 draft class. And now it’s time to sign undrafted free agents.

The Palm Beach Post and USA TODAY Network has covered the festivities in Green Bay all weekend. Keep scrolling for highlights and analysis from the final day of the NFL draft.

NFL draft ends, time for Dolphins UDFA watch

The New England Patriots picked Mr. Irrelevant with the 257th overall pick, and that’s it for the 2025 NFL draft. Now begins the hunt for undrafted free agents as the Dolphins will look to make deals with rookies still looking for a team to fill out their roster needs.

Zeek Biggers to Dolphins

Miami added one more defensive tackle to their 2025 draft class, adding Georgia Tech’s Zeek Biggers with the No. 253 overall pick. He had 104 tackles over four seasons with the Yellow Jackets with two sacks, 10 tackles for loss and two fumble recoveries.

Jordan Phillips reacts to Dolphins picking Dante Trader

The Maryland connection is strong. Watch defensive tackle Jordan Phillips, the Dolphins’ pick at No. 143, react with glee to seeing Terrapins safety Dante Trader Jr. get drafted by Miami just 12 picks later.

Quinn Ewers grade

Hal Habib of the Palm Beach Post gave the seventh-round pick a B-: “He’s not perfect. He can thrown into coverage when he’s stubborn. He also can throw to receivers for chunks of yardage. It’s a no-risk, let’s-see-reward situation.”

USA TODAY’s Ayrton Ostly awarded an A: “Ewers was widely expected to go multiple rounds earlier than this so the Dolphins get great value in Round 7. He needs time to develop some of his shortcomings as a passer but his foundational traits of arm strength and mobility make him a good backup to Tua Tagovailoa even as a rookie.”

Quinn Ewers goes to Dolphins

Tua Tagovailoa has a rookie backup quarterback in Texas’ Quinn Ewers, the 231st overall pick. He’s the No. 137 ranked player on USA TODAY’s Ayrton Ostly’s big board. Ewers will join Tua and newly signed Zach Wilson in the Dolphins QB room.

Ewers was the No. 1 overall recruit in the 2021 class who took Texas to the College Football Playoff the past two seasons. He led the SEC with 32 touchdowns in 2024 but also led it with 12 interceptions. For his career, Ewers threw for 9,128 yards and 68 TDs with 24 picks.

Miami native LaJohntay Webster drafted by Ravens

On the local front, Miami Palmetto grad LaJohntay Webster was taken in the sixth round with the 203rd overall pick to the Baltimore Ravens. The wide receiver spent last season at Colorado, but he is the all-time receptions leader at Florida Atlantic with 252 catches from 2020-2023. Webster put up 2,703 receiving yards at FAU with 21 touchdowns.

When do the Dolphins pick today?

The Miami Dolphins entered with seven picks scheduled for today at the NFL draft. But after a trade with the Texans, they now have six: three picks in the fifth round (143rd, 150th and 155th overall), one in the sixth round (179th overall) and two picks in the seventh round (231st and 253rd overall).

Jason Marshall reaction

Ollie Gordon grade

USA TODAY’s Ayrton Ostly gave the Dolphins’ sixth-round pick a B: “Gordon is a departure from what the Dolphins typically look for in a running back as he’s not a breakaway speedster at the position. He had a much better year in 2023 than in 2024 but was productive for the Cowboys in both seasons. In Miami, he offers a change-of-pace element alongside De’Von Achane.”

Dante Trader analysis

New Dolphins safety Dante Trader originally went to Maryland to play lacrosse. Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post called him a “versatile chess piece,” adding: “Perhaps Trader could fit in as a third safety who specializes in covering, for example, tight ends. Trader can also contribute potentially on special teams.”

Ollie Gordon picked by Dolphins

The Dolphins added another playmaking running back with the 197th overall pick in the sixth round, taking Oklahoma State’s Ollie Gordon II. He won the Doak Walker Award as college football’s best running back in 2023 when he led the nation with 1,732 yards and 21 touchdowns. His 2024 was less impressive, when he ran for 880 yards, but he still put up 13 TDs.

Jason Marshall grade, analysis

Marshall has prototypical size and ran a strong 4.49 in the 40-yard dash but scouts say he’s been inconsistent,” wrote Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. “Scouts say Marshall has smooth movement skills and fluidity. But they also say Marshall has missed some interception opportunities and is not a particularly strong run stopper.”

Hal Habib gave the pick a C: “Marshall is a 6-foot, 194-pounder who hasn’t been the most consistent player in the secondary, but he does make plays.”

Safety Dante Trader picked by Dolphins

Miami went back to Maryland for the second time among its three fifth-round picks, selecting safety Dante Trader Jr. with the 155th overall pick. He made 59 tackles last season with an interception and four pass deflections.

Dante Trader Jr. highlights

Jordan Phillips grade, analysis

“Like Kenneth Grant, Jordan Phillips is a big body who can play nose tackle,” wrote Joe Schad of the Palm Beach Post. “Stopping the run was clearly a priority for the Dolphins. Scouts say Phillips has good work ethic and leadership.”

Hal Habib gave the pick a C-: “His statistics do not overwhelm.”

Cornerback Jason Marshall to Dolphins

Miami has finally taken a cornerback in the draft. With the 150th overall pick, the Dolphins took Jason Marshall Jr. out of Florida. The Miami native played in seven games last season and had two interceptions and 25 pass deflections over four seasons in Gainesville.

Jordan Phillips pick for Dolphins

The Dolphins’ first pick of the day (143rd overall) came from Madrid, and it was for another defensive lineman in Maryland’s Jordan Phillips. He He was the No. 87 player on USA TODAY’s Ayrton Ostly’s big board.

“Phillips’ light feet stand out amid his explosive burst and powerful hands,” Ostly wrote. “His inexperience and youth means he is more projection at this point but he has fantastic tools in a 6-foot-2, 313-pound frame. He will need development to reach his high ceiling but the staff that does that will have an NFL starter on their hands.”

Jordan Phillips highlights

Phillips totaled 58 tackles (3 for loss with no sacks) over three seasons at Tennessee and Maryland. Last season with the Terrapins, he 29 total tackles (17 solo) with 1 tackle for loss.

Will Dolphins draft Shedeur Sanders?

There are two big questions overshadowing the rest of the 2025 NFL draft: Why did Shedeur Sanders fall to Day 3? And who will finally take him? The first is one that doesn’t have a simple answer, though there has been speculation as the draft has unfolded. As for the latter, USA TODAY’s Ayrton Ostly predicts the Colorado quarterback’s team in his final mock draft.

Sanders has now dropped into the fifth round. Should the Dolphins consider him as a backup for Tua Tagovailoa?

Who did the Dolphins draft?

Dolphins mock draft

Round 4: Cobee Bryant and Jalen Rivers. If the Dolphins move on from Jalen Ramsey, as expected, then Bryant and Cam Smith can compete to start. Teams can never have enough cornerbacks and Miami does not have enough. Bryant, 6-foot-180 pounds, is a tough, competitive ball hawk with 13 college interceptions.

Rivers is more of a developmental upside pick than an immediate starter. That said, he is a massive — 6-foot-6, 319-pound — former tackle who may be able to overpower some people with refined techniques from offensive line coach Butch Barry. – Joe Schad, Palm Beach Post
