Packers add Raiders CB Nate Hobbs in 2nd big free agent signing

The Green Bay Packers are adding another piece to their secondary, signing Las Vegas Raiders cornerback Nate Hobbs. According to NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero, it’s a four-year $48 million deal with $16 million guaranteed.

A 2021 fifth-round pick, Hobbs has appeared in 51 of 68 possible games in his four-year career. He’s not overly big, measuring just a hair over 5-foot-11 at the 2021 NFL Combine. At 196 pounds, though, he has decent enough size — and athleticism to spare. Though his 4.48 40-yard dash isn’t eye-popping, Hobbs jumped out of the gym in Combine testing, logging a 40.5-inch vertical leap and a broad jump in excess of 11 feet. Suffice it to say, he’s got some springs.

His best season came early; as a rookie, he played primarily in the slot and nabbed an interception, defended three passes, forced a fumble, and recorded a sack. For his trouble, he was named to the Pro Football Focus all-rookie team that season. And it should be noted that Hobbs played his rookie season at least partially under the guidance of Rich Bisaccia, who took over as the Raiders’ interim head coach midway through that season.

His rookie year was more or less an indicator of how his career with the Raiders would play out. Across his first, third, and fourth years in the NFL, he logged more than 1,500 snaps as a slot defender. It was only in his second season that he lined up primarily outside.

That’s probably an indication of where the Packers will likely use him, but it’s admittedly a bit of a murky picture. Keisean Nixon has played extensively in that role in Green Bay, though he did it less in 2024. But one of the big reasons he was there less was because 2024 second-round pick Javon Bullard was primed to play in the slot.

Now, with Hobbs in the fold, he’ll presumably be lining up in the slot, bumping Nixon outside and Bullard to a more traditional safety role. It can certainly work, but there certainly seems to be a game of musical chairs brewing here, too.
