St. John’s vs. Arkansas: Live updates from March Madness

PROVIDENCE — St. John’s raced past Omaha in a 30-point opening-round March Madness win. And Arkansas survived Kansas and could be hitting its stride at the right time.

Now we’re ready for the matchup that most of the country wanted to see: Rick Pitino vs. John Calipari. If history tells us anything, Saturday’s game at the Amica Mutual Pavilion in Providence could go to the wire.

Game time is set for 2:40 p.m. between No. 2 St. John’s (31-4) and No. 10 Arkansas (21-13). The two programs have only played each other twice and split the two meetings. St. John’s won, 68-65, on March 16, 1985 and Arkansas took the second matchup, 80-74, on March 20, 1993.

Second half (11:58) – Arkansas 53, St. John’s 41

Wilcher picked up his fourth foul and it led to a Brazile oop from Boogie Gland. And Billy Richmond added a fastbreak layup. Ivisic fouled out at the 11:58 mark and Aidoo also has four fouls. Neither team can defend without fouling, something has to give with 12 minutes left.

Aidoo’s 3-point play with 14:38 left gave Arkansas a 49-38 advantage, it’s largest lead of the game.

Second half (15:39) – Arkansas 44, St. John’s 36

Arkansas has made four of its last five shots and held a 10-point lead for a brief second.

Second half (17:29) – Arkansas 40, St. John’s 33

Red Storm call a timeout after back-to-back baskets inside by the Razorbacks. Both sides are in foul trouble here to start the second half. Aidoo has been sitting with three fouls and Ivisic picked up his fourth on a drive by Ejiofor. St. John’s is shooting just 22% for the game and are 1-14 from beyond the arc.

Second half (19:33) – Arkansas 36, St. John’s 32

Wilcher picked up his third personal foul just seconds into the half and was forced to sit.

Halftime: Arkansas 35, St. John’s 32

Arkansas closed the half on a 7-0 run over 2:01 to surge to a lead at the break. The Razorbacks are shooting 37.5% from the floor in the opening 20 minutes. Knox, Brazile and Richmond III all have seven points for Arkansas.

The Red Storm are led by Ejiofor’s game-high 16 points. St. John’s has a 29-25 edge on the boards, but the Red Storm are only shooting 24% from the floor. Calipari mentioned St. John’s second-half success in Friday’s media day, let’s see if the Red Storm come out of the break with a fire.

First half (30 seconds) – Arkansas 33, St. John’s 32

Billy Richmond III’s offensive rebound and putback pulls the Razorbacks to within a point with 1:30 remaining. And then Zvonimir Ivisic’s fadeaway jumper handed Arkansas a 33-32 lead.

First half (3:57) – St. John’s 28, Arkansas 27

After a slow start, St. John’s takes its first lead on Deivon Smith’s layup with 4:25 left in the half.

First half (5:40) – Arkansas 24, St. John’s 24

Two quick dunks from Ejiofor and Luis forces an Arkansas timeout.

First half (6:10) – Arkansas 24, St. John’s 20

St. John’s is shooting just 22% from the floor. Luis (1-9) is going to need to heat up if St. John’s is going to make a run in this first half. Brazile was called for a flagrant and Ejiofor made one free throw.

First half (7:58) – Arkansas 22, St. John’s 14

St. John’s held scoreless for over six minutes as Arkansas is holding to a 20-14 lead. Pitino’s gone into his bench with Wilcher only playing four minutes so far. Luis a,so sat for a stretch between media timeouts. Wilcher and Richmond both have two fouls.

First half (11:42) – Arkansas 18, St. John’s 13

St. John’s is killing Arkansas on the offensive glass (seven offensive rebounds) and it’s awoken the Red Storm faifthful in Providence. This feels like a home game for St. John’s. Ejiofor is up to nine points.

Knox opened with an and-one finish inside after the first media timeout.

First half (15:55) – Arkansas 11, St. John’s 6

Davis has five points at the first media timeout and drained a pullup 3-pointer to give the Razorbacks an early advantage. Arkansas certainly doesn’t look like they are the underdog in the opening minutes.

Johnell Davis, D.J. Wagner, Karter Knox, Trevon Brazile and Jonas Aidoo.

St. John’s starters:

Simeon Wilcher, Kadary Richmond, Aaron Scott, RJ Luis, Jr. and Zuby Ejiofor.
