Start of Cubs’ series finale with Cardinals delayed with rain in Chicago area

The start of Sunday’s game between the Cubs and Cardinals was expected to be delayed with rain in the area.

The final game of the Cubs’ holiday-weekend series with the rival Cardinals began in a delay.

“Due to weather in the area, we expect the start of tonight’s game to be delayed,” read a message on the Wrigley Field video boards.

The game was scheduled to start at 5:10 p.m. and slated for a national broadcast as part of ESPN’s “Sunday Night Baseball.”

The tarp was pulled off the infield around 5:25 pm., and a first-pitch time of 6:10 p.m. was announced.

The Cubs took the first game of the series Friday, smacking a franchise-record eight home runs on the Fourth of July, while the Cardinals came back for a victory Saturday.
