Strong storms with wind gusts up to 75 mph may miss the Twin Cities Monday night, but the National Weather Services advises residents to take precautions.
A storm system, which is expected to travel across the state Monday evening, began forming in South Dakota as of 4 p.m., according to Brennan Dettmann, a meteorologist with the National Weather Service in Chanhassen.
He said the storm is expected to hit southwestern Minnesota around 7 or 8 p.m. and may reach the metro area between 9 and 11 p.m.
The National Weather Service estimated an 80% chance of precipitation in Minneapolis Monday evening. But Dettmann expected the strongest winds only have a 30% chance of reaching the Twin Cities. In addition to wind gusts, the storm could bring heavy rain and a chance of hail, Dettmann said.
He advised that people stay aware of weather alerts and secure any belongings kept outside.
“Have a plan in place because, if those storm do move through, obviously they could do some pretty significant damage.”
