LANSING, Mich. (WILX) – The News 10 First Alert Weather Team has declared Sunday, Mar. 30 a First Alert Weather Day due to the risk for strong to severe thunderstorms.
A Severe Thunderstorm Watch is now in effect until 9 p.m. for the Lansing and Jackson areas.
The Storm Prediction Center has put Mid-Michigan in an Enhanced Risk (level three out of five) for severe weather today. The main timeframe for severe weather will be from 5-9 p.m. today. Strong winds, large hail, and heavy rain are the main threats. However, an isolated tornado cannot be ruled out.
A powerful storm system will race into the northern Great Lakes this afternoon and bring a strong cold front through the area late afternoon into the evening hours. Ahead of the front the potential exists for a line of strong to severe thunderstorms to flare-up on the leading edge of the front.
This is a complicated weather set-up so stay tuned to any changes to the forecast. As severe weather season is just now beginning, it is a good time to review safety plans and have ways to receive watch/warning information if any are issued.
