WASHINGTON, N.C. (WITN) – Ware’s Chapel United Methodist church hosted a sunrise service on Easter Sunday.
The service was held at 6:30 in the morning at Festival Park, where attendees could watch the sun rise by the Washington waterfront.
After observing the sunrise, attendees were invited to join the traditional service at 10:30 a.m. and place fresh flowers on the cross in honor of the holiday and what it commemorates.
Easter Sunday is a Christian Holiday celebrating the resurrection of Jesus Christ from the dead, as observed in the New Testament.
It follows Good Friday, the day many Christians commemorate his death on the cross.
In addition to Ware’s Chapel United Methodist, Kingdom Life Community Church, St. Peter’s Episcopal Church, and First Christian Church also sponsored the event.
Washington was not the only church community that gathered to honor the day.
Many churches held sunrise services at locations across Eastern Carolina, including St. James United Methodist Church in Greenville, with a traditional service to follow.
