Superman: James Gunn & Cast Respond to Kellyanne Conway’s ‘Superwoke’ Complaint

The cast of Superman is supporting James Gunn after a recent comment of his went viral.

Superman will be released in United States theaters this coming weekend from DC Studios and Warner Bros. Pictures. Written and directed by Gunn, the movie stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

Gunn recently told The Times U.K. that Superman “is the story of America. An immigrant that came from other places and populated the country, but for me it is mostly a story that says basic human kindness is a value and is something we have lost.”

When asked if he thinks the movie will be received differently in red states versus blue states, Gunn said, “Yes, it plays differently. But it’s about human kindness and obviously there will be jerks out there who are just not kind and will take it as offensive just because it is about kindness. But screw them.”

The comments quickly went viral as some right-wing people took issue with Gunn’s stance. Fox News, for example, has started calling the movie “Superwoke,” with anchor Kellyanne Conway saying, “We don’t go to the movie theater to be lectured to and to have somebody throw their ideology onto us.”

Conway’s reaction to Gunn’s comments was offered despite the fact that the Superman character has been part of pop culture since the 1930s, and the immigrant allegory has always been a key aspect of his appeal.

What did the Superman cast say about Gunn’s comment?

Gunn told Variety that he doesn’t have “Anything to say to anybody” who is spreading negativity about Superman or trying to turn the issue into a culture war.

“I’m not here to judge people,” he said. “I think this is a movie about kindness, and I think that’s something everyone can relate to.”

Guy Gardner actor Nathan Fillion commented, “Aw, somebody needs a hug. Just a movie, guys.”

James’ brother Sean Gunn, who has been cast as Maxwell Lord in the DCU, said, “My reaction to is that it is exactly what the movie is about. We support our people, you know? We love our immigrants. Yes, Superman is an immigrant, and yes, the people that we support in this country are immigrants and if you don’t like that, you’re not American. People who say no to immigrants are against the American way.”
