LAS VEGAS (KSNV) — As the clock ticks down to the midnight deadline for filing tax returns, the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) is preparing for its busiest time of the year.
Taxpayers have the option to file their returns by mail or online, with the possibility of applying for an extension if they cannot meet today’s deadline.
The IRS, the federal agency responsible for collecting taxes and enforcing tax laws, is facing a potential reduction in workforce.
The Trump administration is considering cutting approximately 20,000 jobs from the agency. This proposed downsizing comes at a critical time as the IRS processes millions of tax returns, refunds, extensions, collections, and payment plans.
Despite the looming changes, experts emphasize the importance of filing taxes on time. “When you’re intimidated by something you typically push it off till the last minute,” said a tax expert. However, they noted that “the tax preparation software is quite good and young people who have their phones in their hands 99.9% of the time can file in certain circumstances using software on their phone.”
For those unable to file by the deadline, an extension can be requested, allowing taxpayers to file anytime between now and October 15.
