SALEM, Ore. (KATU) — As the clock ticks toward midnight on April 15, taxpayers are reminded that today marks the deadline to file state and federal personal income tax returns for the 2024 tax year.
The Oregon Department of Revenue is urging those who have yet to file to take advantage of available tools to ease the process.
The department has processed 1.7 million of the anticipated 2.2 million returns and issued 1.1 million refunds as of April 14.
New this year, taxpayers can file their federal returns directly with the IRS using IRS Direct File and their Oregon returns through Direct File Oregon at no cost.
According to the department, taxpayers using both services have completed their Oregon returns in approximately 17 minutes, with feedback averaging 4.5 out of 5.
However, IRS Direct File does not support all return types, including those with dividends reported on Form 1099-DIV and capital gains or losses.
For those who haven’t filed, electronic filing remains the fastest way to receive refunds.
The Revenue website offers information on free tax preparation software and organizations providing free or reduced-cost assistance. Public computer kiosks for filing taxes with Direct File Oregon are available in regional offices across the state.
Taxpayers can check their refund status using the upgraded “Where’s My Refund?” tool, which now provides additional details and functionality. To access these enhancements, taxpayers must sign into their Revenue Online account.
For those filing paper returns, ensure they are postmarked by today or use drop boxes at various Department of Revenue locations. Staff will be available at the Salem headquarters until 5 p.m. to accept and stamp returns.
Extensions can be filed directly with the Oregon Department of Revenue or the IRS, moving the deadline to October 15, 2025.
An extension to file is not an extension to pay any owed taxes, so taxpayers should pay what they can to avoid penalties.
Additionally, today is the due date for first-quarter estimated payments for the 2025 tax year. Taxpayers can make payments online or mail them separately from other correspondence.
