SEATTLE — Across the country, activists are preparing to unite thousands of people on Saturday, taking to the streets to send a clear message: “Hands off.”
Organizers, including the progressive grassroots group Seattle Indivisible, are rallying against what they see as harmful actions from President Donald Trump and Elon Musk.
Tyna Ek, a member of Seattle Indivisible, said the event is a collective stand against the policies and decisions from the Trump Administration that have been hurting vulnerable groups.
“Right there, the people are rising up to say, ‘hands off, no more,'” Ek said. “What Trump and Musk are doing to everybody is hurting people.”
Seattle Indivisible, a grassroots group focused on progressive change, is central to the effort.
Ek said they are hoping to mobilize citizens around issues affecting people who have been deported, those relying on social security and Medicare, and federal workers who have been laid off.
“I’m hoping that we are completely mobilized, and that we keep in mind who we’re doing this for,” Ek said.
Kayla Ragona, a member of Seattle Indivisible’s board of directors, echoed the sentiment.
“They want us to be afraid. And so one of our messages is, there will be thousands of us at Seattle Center tomorrow saying we are not afraid of you,” Ragona said. “We stand together and we don’t support what’s happening.”
Rallies are also taking place across the country. The White House installed fencing in preparation for the protests. The First Lady, Melania Trump, said tours scheduled for Saturday have been postponed.
As Saturday’s rally approaches, organizers are anticipating a strong turnout. More than 20 speakers are scheduled to take the stage at Seattle Center, alongside live music and plenty of posters to ensure the message is heard loud and clear.
“We’re looking to get people mobilized, and getting them to Seattle Center is the first step,” Ek said. “Then, finding a way they can help tomorrow or the day after that is our other goal.”
