Torpedo-shaped bats made in Fall River shine in record-breaking weekend

FALL RIVER, Mass. (WJAR) — Torpedo-shaped bats have gained attention after the New York Yankees’ 15-homer weekend.

A torpedo bat is essentially just a different shaped bat, looking more like a bowling pin. It moves the sweet spot down the barrel, to help batters who hit near the label and tend to break bats.

The owner of Axis Sports, a baseball bat factory in Fall River, said they have been inundated with phone calls since the weekend.

“I’ve probably had 20 calls between yesterday and today asking if I’m going to make torpedo bats,” said owner of Axis Sports, Louis Ledoux.

Rule 3.02 states that bats cannot be more than 2.61 inches in diameter, and 42 inches in length. The MLB said the torpedo bats the Yankees used against the Brewers over the weekend are legal.

A physicist from MIT, Aaron Leanhardt, is credited with designing the special bat.

While Ledoux has been getting a lot of inquiries, he said it’s too soon to tell if the bats will be a gamechanger for the sport or not.

“It’s too soon to tell, they could’ve just had a great weekend but we’ll see over the course of the season what this bat does for the players,” said Ledoux.
