Traverse City Walmart stabbing: Officials release new details on suspect, victims injured

TRAVERSE CITY, Mich. – The Grand Traverse County sheriff and prosecutor, as well as officials from Munson Healthcare, provided more details on the random attack at a Walmart Saturday afternoon.

11 people were stabbed at a Walmart on July 26 at around 5 p.m. The suspect is in custody thanks to police and good Samaritans.

According to the sheriff, multiple people, including one person with a handgun, detained the suspect until first responders arrived.

New details on suspect

The suspect was identified as Bradford James Gille, 42, from Afton.

He is currently in Grand Traverse County Jail and faces one charge of terrorism and 11 charges of assault with intent to murder.

According to the sheriff, Gille has had prior assault allegations and controlled substance violations.

The weapon he allegedly used in the attack was a folding knife with a 3.5-inch cutting blade.

Gille was in the store from 4:10 p.m. until the stabbing happened.

A motive for the attack has not yet been determined. When he was arrested, the sheriff said there was minimal conversation from Gille.

The prosecutor’s office will be authorizing the charges on Monday. Gille is expected to be arraigned on Monday or Tuesday.

It’s not exactly clear as to why Gille was in the area. The sheriff said he may have resided in Grand Traverse County at one point.

Updates on victims

11 people were injured in the violent attack and were taken to Munson Medical Center. One of the victims is a Walmart employee.

Officials from the hospital reported that one person was treated and released on Sunday.

As of July 27 at 2 p.m., ten people remain in the hospital. Two are still in serious condition, while the rest are in fair condition. All are expected to survive.

Good Samaritans

Media outlets asked the sheriff for some more details on the good Samaritans who helped stop and detain Gille.

The sheriff asked everyone to grant them the privacy they need and wait for them to provide a public statement.

“Give them some space,” he said. “What they did was amazing.”

Community counseling

A community counseling center is available to all community members at the Innovation Center in Traverse City at the Cedar Lot from Monday to Wednesday, 10 a.m. to 7 p.m. There will be free counseling for everyone who may need it.

Grand Traverse Mental Health Crisis and Access Center, located at 410 Brook Street, also offers 24-hour counseling.
