Tropical Storm Chantal moves towards the Carolina coast: What to know

CHARLOTTE, N.C. (WBTV) – As Tropical Storm Chantal begins to slowly move towards the northwest and make landfall in South Carolina tomorrow morning, areas along and east of I-77 can expect heavy downpours and gusty winds on Sunday.

After a beautiful, breezy day we are gearing up to end this holiday weekend with some wind and rain. Tonight, will be partly cloudy with occasional wind gusts up to 25mph; expect lows in the lower 70s. By tomorrow morning, rainbands from Tropical Storm Chantal will spread into Charlotte and cities along and east of I-77. Expect wind gusts up to 35mph and heavy downpours to continue off-and-on throughout the day along with some rumbles of thunder.

In the impacted areas, 1-3″ rainfall will be possible with some locally higher totals farther east.

With the cloud cover and the rain, tomorrow’s highs will only climb into the mid to upper 80s.

On Monday and Tuesday there will be a chance for some isolated to widely scattered showers and thunderstorms, but the big story will be the heat!

Highs on Monday and Tuesday will climb into the mid to upper 90s along with heat index values up to 103. We have First Alerts in place on Wednesday and Thursday for widespread showers and thunderstorms; highs will top out in the lower 90s.
