Val Kilmer was best known for his roles in the films Batman, Top Gun, The Doors, and more, but he almost added “reality star” to his resume.
Following Kilmer’s death at age 65, his movie co-star Will Forte shared a little-known story about the actor’s desire to delve into the reality TV realm as a contestant on The Amazing Race.
Forte shared the story in a poignant essay for Vulture published shortly after Kilmer’s death on April 1. In the essay, Forte revealed that he became close with Kilmer after working with him in the 2010 action-comedy film MacGruber, and they later became temporary roommates. During the two-month period that Kilmer stayed with Forte, the two regularly watched the CBS adventure reality show, The Amazing Race, together.
“At a certain point, he said, ‘Will, you and I have to go do The Amazing Race. We have to. Let’s do The Amazing Race,” Forte recalled of Kilmer. “I’m like, ‘I am so fully in.’ We got really excited about it, and then we called our respective agents and managers, and they were like, ‘There’s no way you guys are doing that.’ “
Forte added that the missed opportunity still haunts him. “That is, maybe to this day, the biggest regret of my whole career — that I never did ‘The Amazing Race’ with Val,” he wrote. “I think we would’ve gotten out very quickly, but it just would’ve been the experience of a lifetime.”
The Amazing Race premiered on CBS in 2001. The show features teams of two who race around the world in pursuit of a $1 million prize. The first couple to reach the final destination takes home the prize.
While most of the competing couples aren’t big-name celebrities, there have been a some famous faces on The Amazing Race. The White Lotus creator Mike White and New Kids on The Block alum Jonathan Knight have both competed on the CBS competition show in the past, according to People magazine.
Kilmer and Forte would have been the biggest names ever on the show had their agents not put the kibosh on the idea.
