(TNND) — Walmart has announced it will not impose an itemized surcharge on its purchases in response to President Trump’s tariffs. This statement comes amid speculation following reports that Amazon was considering adding a tariff fee to its sales.
“Walmart is working hard to keep prices low on as many products as possible, despite uncertainty over President Trump’s aggressive tariffs,” the company said in a statement.
The report about Amazon’s potential surcharge prompted a strong reaction from the White House. During a press briefing, Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt displayed a picture of Amazon CEO Jeff Bezos and relayed President Trump’s view, calling the potential surcharge a “hostile and political act.”
Amazon responded swiftly, clarifying that while its Amazon Haul budget shopping site had considered the idea, it was never approved. President Trump expressed satisfaction with Amazon’s response, telling reporters, “Jeff Bezos is very nice. Terrific, he solved the problem very quickly. He did the right thing. Good guy.”
Walmart, in its recent investment call, highlighted that more than two-thirds of the products sold in its U.S. stores are “made, grown or assembled” domestically.
