Will Howard came to Ohio State last offseason via the transfer portal from Kansas State for a couple of reasons. One was to win a College Football Playoff national championship. Check. Another reason was to improve his stock as a quarterback so that he could be selected in the NFL draft. Check again.

Howard eventually came off the board in the sixth round thanks to a pick from the Pittsburgh Steelers. It’s a really good landing spot for the quarterback because of the style of play, the Steelers’ history of making the most of their draft picks, and the ability for Howard to sit and learn from Russell Wilson.

It wasn’t a foregone conclusion that Howard would get drafted. Though he showed leadership, poise, moxie, and some pretty spectacular throws as a Buckeye, many thought he was the beneficiary of an extremely talented offense, even if he has NFL size to boot. So, when he was finally selected by Pittsburgh, to say things got emotional might be a bit of an understatement.
