Western Michigan hockey wins its first national championship in program history with a 6-2 victory over Boston University

ST. LOUIS, Mo. (WILX) – Western Michigan hockey made program history on Saturday night with a 6-2 victory over Boston University to capture the 2025 national championship in St. Louis. It’s the Broncos’ first-ever national championship, and it comes just a few years after Pat Ferschweiler was hired to be WMU’s head coach in 2021.

Just 98 seconds into the game, Wyatt Schingoethe found the back of the net to give the Broncos a one-goal lead. BU tied it at 1-1, but five minutes later WMU’s Cole Crusberg-Roseen scored to give Western back a 2-1 lead. It stayed that way into the second period until Ty Henricks scored to give the Western a 3-1 lead. Boston got a goal back, but Owen Michaels and Iiro Hakkarainen both scored goals in the third to give some insurance. The Broncos finished the job and captured the title with a 6-2 victory.

Western Michigan will now return home to Kalamazoo to celebrate its national championship with its fans.
