What time is Pope Francis’ funeral? Here’s the full schedule

Mourners will have one final day to view the body of Pope Francis before a funeral Saturday, April 26 will be held in the middle of Vatican City to honor the leader of the Catholic church.

Francis, who suffered a stroke, fell into a coma and died on Easter Monday at 88 years old, has been lying in state since Wednesday in St. Peter’s Basilica, the papal enclave in Rome. Since then, tens of thousands of faithful have lined multiple blocks to pay their final respects to Francis, dressed in red vestments with a traditional white bishop’s mitre on his head.

Public visitation will come to an end Friday, April 25 before the funeral takes place the next day, which will be an international affair attended by leaders from around the world.

Here’s everything we know about the schedule in the coming days:

Vatican may extend visitation time as Francis lies in state

The Vatican was considering extending visitation time for the faithful to pay homage to Pope Francis at St. Peter’s Basilica after a massive crowd stretched for blocks April 23 and 24 to see him lying in state.

St. Peter’s Basilica, which was scheduled to close at midnight Wednesday, April 23, remained open until 5:30 a.m. local time Thursday, April 24 to accommodate mourners who had waited hours to pause at the open casket. The basilica was expected to remain open until midnight Thursday unless the Vatican decided to once again extend the viewing hours.

The basilica is already scheduled to be open to mourners for a third and final day from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. on Friday, April 25.

Irish-American Cardinal Kevin Farrell was scheduled to preside over the rite of the sealing of the pope’s coffin on Friday at 8 p.m. local time (2 p.m. ET.)

What time is Pope Francis’ funeral?

A funeral for Pope Francis will be held at 10:00 a.m. local time (4 a.m. ET) Saturday, April 26. More than 200,000 people are expected to attend.

Who will preside over the service?

Cardinal Giovanni Battista Re, dean of the College of Cardinals, will preside over the funeral Mass, which will be celebrated by patriarchs, cardinals, archbishops, bishops and priests from around the world, the Vatican has said.

Where is Pope Francis’ funeral?

The funeral will take place in St. Peter’s Square, the famous large plaza in front of the basilica in Vatican City.

Francis’ funeral less lavish but keeps some traditions

Francis wanted a less opulent burial than is traditional for popes and made changes to the church’s book on funeral rites, but some of the usual elements remain in place.

One of them is the three stations of the procedure, named after where those key moments take place: Station One is at the pope’s home; Station Two is at St. Peter’s Basilica at the Vatican; and Station Three is at the burial site, which in this case will be the Basilica of Saint Mary Major in Rome.

Who is attending Pope Francis’ funeral?

The solemn ceremony will draw world leaders from around the globe.

President Donald Trump, who has already announced he will attend the funeral in Rome with first lady Melania Trump, is due to fly from Washington, D.C., on Friday morning and return to the U.S. on Saturday, the White House announced.

Britain’s Prince William, son of King Charles III, will attend the funeral on his father’s behalf, Kensington Palace said. UK Prime Minister Keir Starmer also will attend.

Other confirmed attendees include:

Russian President Vladimir Putin won’t be present but will decide soon who will make up the Russian delegation, Russian Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov said Wednesday. China’s Foreign Ministry said it had no information on plans for Chinese representation.

Procession to take place through streets of Vatican

Streets will be closed to traffic around the Vatican on Saturday and authorities were still assessing the best route for the procession that will take the coffin from the funeral to the burial site.

About 2,000 police officers will be on duty, joined by thousands more officers from the national security forces. Security measures will include patrols on the Tiber, drones and snipers.

Where will Pope Francis be buried?

Francis confirmed in his final testament released on Monday that he wished to be buried in Rome’s Basilica of Saint Mary Major, instead of in the crypt of St. Peter’s Basilica, where many of pope’s predecessors were laid to rest.

The wish represents a break in tradition, making him the first pope in more than a century to be buried outside the Vatican.

Francis had also asked to be buried in a simple wooden casket.

Nine days of mourning to follow funeral

The funeral begins nine days of mourning, prayers and remembrance as the world’s attention slowly turns to the issue of naming Pope Francis’ successor.

Each of the nine days will be marked by Masses, which Cardinals present in Rome will lead, according to the Vatican News.
