TV networks and media are preparing for the funeral of Pope Francis, a humble yet forceful pontiff who died on April 21 and leaves behind a legacy of inclusion and activism.
Funeral ceremonies are set to take place on Saturday, April 26 at the Vatican, where mourners have solemnly walked through St. Peter’s Basilica to pay their last respects to the Holy Father.
Francis died of a stroke and irreversible heart failure, Vatican doctor Andrea Arcangeli said in a death certificate released April 21. He was 88. Since Wednesday, he has been lying in state in St. Peter’s Basilica, the papal enclave in Rome, where thousands have gathered to pay homage. Public visitation will come to an end Friday, April 25 before the funeral takes place the next day.
More than 170 heads of state or government, including President Donald Trump and Prince William, are expected to be in attendance to honor and remember the late Pope.
While Francis wanted a less opulent burial than is traditional for popes and made changes to the church’s book on funeral rites, some of the usual elements such as the three stations of the procedure, named after where those key moments take place, remain in place.
