White House press secretary Karoline Leavitt suggested in a briefing Monday that President Donald Trump deserves credit for Colorado quarterback Shedeur Sanders securing a team spot after four rounds.
When asked by Fox News correspondent Peter Doocy if the president believes he should receive credit for Sanders — son of football coach Deion Sanders — getting picked by the Cleveland Browns, Leavitt said through laughter: “All I will say is the president put out a statement and a few rounds later he was drafted. So, I think the facts speak for themselves now, Peter.”
Trump praised Deion Sanders and Shedeur Sanders in a Truth Social post on Friday and questioned the intelligence of NFL owners while complimenting the younger Sanders’ “PHENOMENAL GENES.”
“What is wrong with NFL owners, are they STUPID?,” wrote Trump. “He should be “picked” IMMEDIATELY by a team that wants to WIN.”
He was snagged by the Cleveland Browns as the 144th pick on Saturday.
Shedeur Sanders was a long-projected top pick in mock drafts and media circles ahead of the 2025 NFL draft last week. But the former University of Colorado quarterback was skipped over during the first four rounds.
His draft stock was partially hampered by physical limitations, scouts said. He boasts a great touch and is a phenomenal processor of the game. But he’s far from an elite athlete, and some have questioned his arm strength and speed.
But that’s not exactly why he tumbled to round five — the margins of the NFL, where regular-season roster spots are far from a guarantee.
Critics said that had more to do with how Shedeur Sanders and his team approached the draft process. The quarterback reportedly bombed some of his interviews with teams, refused to work out at the NFL scouting combine and didn’t compete at the Senior Bowl. That, coupled with good but not great physical tools, led to the wipeout and subsequent Trump shout out.
